I am seriously thinking to replace the Liquid Cooling System of a dual 2.5Ghz.

    I have found this guide:

    http://scatcat.fhsu.edu/~r_fernandez/morphos/G5LCStoPassiveConversion.pdf

    Has anyone tried it?

One of the mos important topics I am thinking of is how to calibrate the Passive heatsinks -came from older CPUs-, on the current 2.5Ghz CPUs correctly.

Anyone who has done this procedure, can get in this topic and share, tips and ideas. Thanks.

There is an older thread about this:

Maybe it has some tips or ideas.

I have been thinking about doing this to my dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac too.

At the 2015 AmiWest Show, my G5 PowerMac system was reporting temps of 85 to 90 degrees Celsius, but the air being pushed out of the back of the computer case was barely warmer than the cool air in the room, and everyone who looked at the system assured me that if it was really that hot, it would melt within a minute or two, and told me to not worry about continuing to run it, as the temps shown in MorphOS on the top bar/dock could not be correct. Also, the fans were not spinning up to the maximum speed, which makes me believe that the temperature was not really as high as what was shown on the top bar/dock thingy.

I no longer have MacOSX 10.5.8 loaded on the hard drive, so could not check to see if MacOSX would show the same high temps.

Does the sensor need to be recalibrated every time the G5 CPU modules are removed for cleaning or maintenance? I didn't have the tools needed to remove the G5 CPU modules at the show, but will remove them and check for any new leaks, plus check the condition of the thermal paste and re-apply new thermal paste to make sure the CPUs have good heat transfer to the heat sinks of the liquid cooling system.

The 2nd idling G5 CPU was also very hot (58C) for a CPU that is not being used. I would think that if one of the G5 CPUs was really 85 to 90 degrees Celsius, and it didn't melt anything, it would probably cause lockups, or on screen artifacts, or some other problems, but I am still a bit nervous about the reported temperature, and would like to find and fix the error, if possible.

... Man, I remember writing that guide. :) Glad that my old college left the files alone.

You may as well go for it. I got tired of the 2.7 not calibrating again so I took out all 4 intake and exhaust fans and put some slient fans in. Sure its alittle louder than usual but move air out great.

My only luck on calibrating the CPUs was on a random 2.5ghz set I got off ebay which I managed to resurrect by cleaning up the leaked liquid on the CPU with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. They calibrated great with the passive heatsinks. (Active cooling of course with the fans going)

You may have different results. Especially if your LCS is the older Delphi you may want to take them apart and have a look to be sure its not a slow death! :)

Can you give some advice about the cpu calibration with the passive heatinks?
Do you recommend fan replacing after all? And is there a way to maje the fan cooling active? How I would manage to have them all going on all the time?

I would read the givem topic of ourse -thanks Andreas-. Just looking for some first advice.

You will need the Apple Service Diagnostics CD. I forget which version off hand it was to calibrate a G5. Surely there has to be an ISO somewhere around the internet. ;)

If you are still using the same matching CPUs, just be sure to put them in into the right slots again. For the most part, when I left the stock fans in it kept quiet, but time to time would spin up once it would get hotter. CPU Temps would be slightly on the higher side, but again the LCS calibration from before will spin the fans up as needed to move out some of the air. Don't worry, its all technically "active cooling" since all 4 fans down below spin. They spin the moment you power up the machine. :)

Do I recommend fan replacement? Ehhhh, If you are wanting to make the overall temperature of the CPUs cooler, then sure.

Good luck if you go that route. If you never have ripped apart the CPUs from the LCS then you may want to give it a look.

I used this version: ASD 2.5.7

    Apple Service Diagnostic is distributed to Apple Service Providers only for use with PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.5/1.33GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.33GHz), PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz), iBook G4 (Early 2004), iBook G4 (14-inch Early 2004), eMac (USB2.0), Power Mac G5, Power Mac G5 (June 2004 Series), Power Mac G5 (Late 2004), Power Mac G5 (Early 2005), iMac G5, iBook G4 (12-inch Late 2004), iBook G4 (14-inch Late 2004), Mac mini, and iMac G5 w/ALS (Ambient Light Sensor).

I converted my G5 2.7 tower to passive cooled one. And also i replaced all of the apple system fans too with more silent version. So now my Mos machine quiet. (of course this is relative)

Temperature with leaked liquid cooler was 85-90C
with replaced liquid cooling (PC cooling parts not apple) 62-65C
With "passive" heatsinks 70-75C (On OSX side with heavy load the highest temp was 51C, iddle 36C , avarage 42-25C with this setup.)
Of course ambient temp was around 25C

Anyway keep in mind that apple recalibration process only works under 25C

AFAIK under MOS there is no cpu switching so the central processor work with full power, under OSX there is, so thats why i think there is difference between the temperature numbers.

Anyway MOS temperature will not be correct, because i can touch the heatsinks (means it is cooler than 60C),
    MorphOS PowerBook G4 1,67GHz, 2GB Ram, 250GBHdd, ATI 9700/128MB
    Morphos G5 2,7GHz, 8GB Ram, 500GB Hdd, ATi Passive cooled 9800 PRO/128MB

    @Derringer

Good information. :) I been meaning to run OS X to see how the temps would vary. I did try calibration on a cooler room but still no luck. I will try again with another G5 and see if I have any luck.
