As I know it will not work. The speed the cpu has to go is hardcoded in the motherboard (so your 2.7 cpu will go at 2.3) and probably if the cpu is not recognized correctly so the fans will stay 100% all the time. Someone else maybe can explain it better.

Was worried the motherboard was hard coded.
Was hoping there were jumpers like on a PC motherboard.

Not only has the 2.7 a higher clocked FSB, I've also heard that installing non-matching CPUs would decrease performance even further.

If the CPU speeds are hard coded in, why did my 2.7ghz clock down to a 2.3ghz when i swapped out the CPU set? Sure the fans kicked on at full speed, but it still operated. Strange cause when I drop in the 2.0 set it doesnt spin up full speed. Though the 2.3ghz I put in came from a Xserve G5.

Either way, let it blow up! 8-)

AFAIK the problem is there, that each board set only one cpu/bus etc speed. As if you overclocking a G4 mostly the system not recognized the correct fsb/clock so it gives for example a 750MHz. However the cpu is working on 1,7GHz. If you set the correct table datas on OF then the system shows the correct clock too.

This is complicated in a g5 system, because the system set the fsb and other things after the cpu. So if you put an 2,7 GHz in a motherboard which has an 2,5GHz cpu originally and set the correct cpu data tables, then it will work. (the fsb will set to higher freq) Or vica versa, unfortunatelly no-one has leaked this information how to do.

That's why there is only 1,3GHz cpu speed in an 1,6 GHz board with 1,8GHz cpu.

There are google results that show you can drop a 2.3 into a 2.0 machine and it will clock right.
I do not believe it is an absolute that swapping is a no no.
    Sometimes it works fine.

Yeah I agree. I think no one bother to swap, thats the only problem

Yea, I had to try for myself. Claiming it doesn't work had me curious. I believe that a 2.5ghz cpu set might be able to work in the 2.0ghz. Mind you that the 2.0ghz towers I have are the "newer" revised ones which have the 8 ram banks, I can't speak for the older 4 memory bank models.

I was seeing some people with G5s happen to have 2.3ghz setups that contained the 5.2.4f1 boot rom. I would be very curious to see if these newer boot roms could boot up the 2.7ghz cpu set.

Incase anyone is wondering, my air cooled 2.7ghz is still going strong at 75c. 8-)

Just running System Update from OSX will update the firmware to the latest supported by your motherboard. If no updates are found it means you have the very latest firmware already.

It has the "latest" for the board, but even if you have a newer 2.7ghz tower with 5.2.4f1, the newest you can find online is still 5.1.8f7. (Crap now I forgot exactly what revisions for each one, but still. ) :)

    Either way, :)
