Hi everybody!

Today we released Scalos V40.33 for both AmigaOS3.x (68K) and MorphOS/PPC.

Scalos 40.33 has heavily improved installation, especially for first-time Scalos users, and of course lots of bug fixes.

Scalos now comes with a complete initial configuration, incliding deficons.prefs and background images for desktop and windows.

Jürgen

Can't say for anyone else, but I cannot wait to give it a try! Scalos has always been full of potential, and deficon support is a major lacking in Ambient (imho) that Scalos certainly addresses.

Latest Ambient snapshot support deficons too. Just copy def_xxx.info into the ENVARC:Sys/

Hi, the new version seems to be much more
stable. Only problem I encountered was that
it installed German language menu prefs by
default. I switched back to my previous
menu prefs and it worked ok. I will do some
more testing but so far this release seems
quite good. :)

P.S: Some of my popup menus for drawer icons
etc. are still in German and I can't seem
to modify them by altering the menu prefs.

I just installed it as a WB replacement on my backup partition and its
awesome BUT ONE THING: It in GERMAN!!! How do I make all the menus in
ENGLISH????

Initial first impression.........
Installer hangs for me at a "matrix" wallpaper
Tried to manually install, nogo
Very highly unstable at this point
I seem to be missing some req'd files?
Simply changing the background wallpaper goes to suspend/reboot software failure

this is on the AIAB E-UAE version

I'll fight this later when I have more time

Locks up on me in the same place on MorphOS. I just ran the installer
again after a reboot and it was fine. I stall cant get the main
desktop rightclick menu in english. I have no clue where the setting
for that is. Deleting the German and french catalogs didnt do any good
prior to an install. Do I need an english catalog or something?

Oops! Seems there is still a major bug in the installer script

However, that can easily be fixed:
Take the installation archive, and manually copy the following things:

1 file from
env-archive/scalos.MOS/Menu13.prefs
to
ENVARC:Scalos/Menu13.prefs

and

the entire directory from
env-archive/scalos.MOS/FileTypes/#?
to
ENVARC:Scalos/FileTypes/

That will set all your preferences to the english versions!

Sorry for the inconvenience

Jürgen

It worked! Thanks, it looks great. The only thing I miss is a
dock/pannels feature. If I had that I would switch in a second! I
tried amidock and it wont run at all, even with classact and new
gadgets instslled.

Quote:

Yes, we are aware of that deficiency :(

Problem is just lack of programmers -- we are open if anybody volunteers to start developing a decent dock application for Scalos!!

Jürgen

Well you may want to look into the Ambient released source and see how they do it and use the code. Its GPL so I think you can get away with that couldnt you?

Also I notice that when I right click to delete an about box opend every time for the delete.module, is this normal and can I turn it off. That a bit of an bother.

Quote:

Well, the delete.module wasn't originally developed by Scalos team, as you can see in the "About" box.

You can easily turn off the "About" popup by selecting the "preferences" page and selecting the "Quiet start" checkbox!

Jürgen

@Acill:

If You take some code from GPL'ed app, Your app have to be GPL too. Otherwise it's illegal.

Yes, I am aware that delete.module is GPL, and anybody can request the current source from me.
Additionally, I will put an archive with the recent source code onto the Scalos web site.

However, I do not consider delete.module an integral part of the Scalos main code, and accordingly see no necessarity to make Scalos GPL, too!

Should a problem arise from this point of view, we will abandon delete.module and develop one ourselves.

Jürgen

Because of issues like this, GPL'd code can be difficult to use in some projects.

I can't say exactly what I would do, since GPL is really kind of funny--and rather draconian in some instances.

[P.S.: Jurgen, I hope you don't mind, but I kidnapped the Scalos "S" to make a "forum flag" for scalos on the site here...]

[ Edited by Targhan on 2005/4/25 18:42 ]

GPL = freedom by dictatorship

I installed it as workbench replacement without any hangups and my first impression is that it really rocks!!! It gives me a lot of features I was missing under Ambient. Now even the PNG icons under AmiStart work.
But I still have two little (?) problems with this Scalos release:

- The background pictures don't work (when the system starts, i can see the desktop wallpaper for about a millisecond, then it disappears). Any clue for this?

- Whenever I delete a folder I have to confirm every file in that folder!?! I guess it's just a configuration issue, but I didn't find the corresponding setting yet.

Thanks for your help!

PoD

That forum flag scalos "s" looks like a dog turd!! I thought it was at first and had to look at it again.

 leave it to Acill to not beat around the bush! Will have to come up with something else later I suppose...

@LorD
I believe GPL has it's place, and it needs to be enforced where it applies. The real problem (as I see it) is that too many people release too many smaller items under GPL. When a function, a single class, or other modular structure is released as GPL--then the scope of GPL has been reduced to such miniscule proportions that not only other projects suffer but the whole concept of GPL can come under attack.

Quote:

Unfortunately, I haven't ever heard about such an effect :(

What about your window backdrop patterns?

Quote:

Whene delete.module opens its window, you can see that there are two register pages.
Just look at the "Settings" page, and you can see two checkboxes
(I just have German locale here, so I cannot tell you the exact labels)
Anyway, with those two checkboxes you can turn off the requests upon deletion of files and directories!

Jürgen

@juergen:
thanks for the tip about the delete module!

Quote:

They are also not visible. The only backdrop i can see is that on the status bar at the bottom of windows (if that is one).

I have another problem with the latest Scalos release for MorphOS:

dnetc behaves kinda strange!?!
It doesn't start as an appicon anymore, like it used under ambient. Instead it starts as a shell window which is a little hard to close (only through ctrl+c).
Anyone else who also experienced this problem?

Quote:

Have you ever check the icon attributes?
With Scalos and WB3.9 you can select the start method for the program (WB/shell/ARexx). AFAIK, Ambient doesn't support that.
If you set the startup method to "Workbench", dnetc should work as before.

Jürgen

very highly unstable on E-UAE/aiab
had to re-install entire emulation to recover

Installer hangs at matrix screen, manualy copied files but no joy, simply changing patterns or wallpapers will guru the machine
upon reset it claims deadend error software failure task: ReopenScalosWindow
8000 0004 blah blah blah

just headsup for euae users

Just want to mention that you are not the only one with this bug.
