Nvidia Bounty for MorphOS support

Well, I will make a small list why this should be done!:

    1) More PowerPC Macs which MorphOS already supports would work since they have Nvidia instead of ATI
    2) The 3D part (if made) is faster in many cases.
    3) No need to change a bought PowerMac G4 or PowerMac G5 with Nvidia to ATI as not all ATI cards you buy on-line have
a ROM ready for PowerPC. The process to put a new rom into the card is not really made for end-users.

All in all. This would ease lowendmac users wanting support for their beloved PowerPC G4 Macs. It would be a pleasant gift
to those. By supporting more Apple users, we also support a better enviroment for all of us. When MorphOS got released for
MacPPC I thought it was a bad idea, but now I see how great effect it is on enviroment as people dont throw out their old
PowerPC Macs, but instead make use of them. Same goes for Nvidia cards. MorphOS could be promoted as the helping or
    enviroment friendly OS.

Now we should think this ways and not be egoistic and think the best for yourself but also for everyone around you. MorphOS
is a brilliant AmigaOS Compatble OS and let us give everyone a choice to not throw out their old lowendmacs.

The butterflies should show the way! Do you?

Like I said, more supported hardware would be _nice_, but the question is is if it's really worth it. If you can get 10% extra gfx power for 50% more work, then it's just not worth it.

Besides, if the Team decides to port MorphOS to the quad core PowerMac G5 with PCI-e slots, then we could use Radeon HD cards instead. That would be an massive upgrade of performance.

Another question is also what all this extra power would go to. 500 fps Quake instead of 100? It's not like we got a whole lot of games out there that feels slow without the extra power.

Not power or performance. Just the ability to use nvidia Macs.
    Nothing more, nothing less.
I don't care if they never upgrade the driver.
Get it done once, provides with with a long term source code and knowledge of how to do it from here on out. Maybe help with the next platform also.
It helped AROS and they are x86.

I am more interested to migrate MorphOS to a 64Bit OS (-> DualPPC and Dualcore G5)......but I know, with that wish I am a minority.....

Many of the ARM platforms use nvidia.
Therefore Linux complained about close source nvidia and were handed nouveau.
If we go ARM this WILL be a problem.

    Another thing then.

The problem with NVidia is that they don't support open source. They did finally starting to make drivers for Linux when they realized they would make a buck from it. From what I've heard, nouveau is still not a perfectly working driver because it's made by trial and error reverse engineering.

    It must work well enough.
Linux forces it on you now.
You gotta blacklist it just to get rid of it and use genuine nvidia drivers.

    ...but only as secondary cards:

As has already been set straight in this thread, the Linux community wasn't "handed nouveau" but developed it for itself.

IMHO its not worth it with Nvidia drivers, sure Power Mac users might have to look around for a new Card when buying a new machine but the Radeon cards work just fine. If more cards would be supported i would much rather see flashed cards working. Theres also so many more useful things to do rather than getting drivers for Nvidia cards.

So wait, if we have someone free who can develop it, and it doesn't take away from other work, then you still don't want it worked on?

Complete Radeon-drivers first! eg: Where is dual-monitor-support? On PB external monitors are only supported with the same resolution as internal display, a.s.o.

@bash64: Nobody of MOS-Team says explicit, that MOS will switch to ARM or any other architecture than PPC. They only spoke about the possibility in some years, that MOS may change to another hardware platform - and today they are not sure to which one (if this will ever happen)......
So, don't let us talk about unconfirmed rumors....

Well, Amigaharry2, I am getting arguments non stop on this thread that work on the next platform should not be stopped just to make the nvidia driver. So if your trying to get the point across that NO work is being done on that then maybe you should shout a little louder because no one is listening or believes that.
    '
P.S. If no work is being done on the next platform then you just made my point....do the nvidia driver.

As a beta tester I can tell you a whole lot of work is being done ;-) It's unfair to assume that if the Team is not working on the API shift, they are really not doing anything. The last 8 updates of MorphOS is pretty much proof that they are doing a whole lot.

an NVidia driver would be appreciated. A tiny PB 12" would be a nice gaming machine. Dont know if its worth the work.

For the future, i hope that they will switch to intel based Macs with radeon hd cards. Thats probably the safest way for morphos.

There isn't that much difference between the 1.5GHz NVidia 12" PB and the (supported) latest generation 1.33GHz 12" iBook.

The nay-sayers don't matter, all that does matter is that those who want x are prepared to pay for it and that there is actually someone capable of delivering.

What would be the benefit of all that? We have already plenty mac models supported. Why want nvidia drivers for just some more models? Just do dig out another dusty model instead of picking one for cheap money that is already supported. Sell your nvidia pbook and buy a Radeon one instead. Nvidias dont offer more performance. Better support modern cards instead of just another bunch of cards that is more than a decade old. It is just a waste of time and money to want to have them supported. Radeons are good. nvidas are not better in that low end segment where MOS lives. It does not really matter which graphics card is supported. MOS users will not realize the difference because software lacks for this. Go for Radeons and love them. They are good. nvidia is no better and just wastes resources that should be used for improving Cybergraphics and Radeon drivers instead.

What you are really talking about when saying "Nvidia support", is reallocating MorphOS development efforts on support for extremely old GFX cards. I simply can't see the point?

I agree with several others in this thread - What MorphOS needs is a clear migration path to *a modern HW platform*, not more support for ancient stuff (GFX cards, old computers) that is getting less and less relevant for every minute that pass by...

I agree with many that more hardware drivers are a waste of time and energy.

We already have enough models supported (far more than we would have dreamed of a few years ago), and it would be better to work on more content and better features. I think that the developers should jump on the band wagon pushing for more content (original programs, or ported ones) and make them easily ported to AmigaOS4.x, AROS and possibly even AmigaOS3.x, in addition to native on MorphOS, so that the developers can sell more copies and recoup a little more money.

The few people who are promoting more software for AmigaOS4.x are not mistaken that it is the best thing to do at this time, since they now have a couple of hardware choices that might be available for a while. Content will give us more users and MorphOS already has a huge lead in features and professional level of the OS itself. We should not stand still while AmigaOS4.x gets closer to catching up in some areas on the OS side, while getting a huge push toward new programs as well. I would hate to see the popularity of MorphOS be passed by AmigaOS4.x due to more content available, when MorphOS is clearly the better OS.

I think that MorphOS is proof that there is still life in old single core 32 bit systems. I think improving what we got is the best route for now, and that is also what the Team is doing. I'm in no hurry to switch ISA. If I want power, there are plenty of other machines I can use. But for the most times I don't want or need power, I want a good operating system :-)

    Food for thought:
ATI goes out of business. The only way to move on is to have an nvidia driver or keep using hardware that is getting older and older.

Aint like this hasn't happened to us before.
Be nice to just have the driver even if it is half assed.
