    @ Yasu:
Alfonso Ranieri created a MCC MUI Class for animated gifs in 2003. This class is used by Polynet which can use animated gifs as buttons images. You can download here:
    http://digilander.libero.it/asoft/
If you click on "GIFAnim.mcc" link you will go in another page and you will find MUI Class archive, sources and a little application to show animated gifs. Download that applications, dearchive it and place it where you want. Now you have an animated gifs display tool to use with Ambient MIME.

    @Jambalah

This is a great program! Works like a charm!

One thing: what arguments in MIME do I have to write to get the file to start automatically when double clicking on it?

    [EDIT] Found it!

    Choose AmigaDOS --> [directory of file]/GIFAn %sp

    Don't check anything below.

    Works :-)

OK, I got hte 68k client from Aminet. It works but as archives can grow big a native client would be better to save time while uncompressing. And the bug is that the client is missing but the menu entry is there. The user does what Ambient offers but this does not work. And also some clients can be found on disk and others not. It should not be up to the user to dig for these and find out himself.

Also there are other clients which did not work, e.g. bzip2. Although I copied it the same way as 7z I can enter 7z archives but not bz2 archives. And for ADF or DMS there is no client at all as it seems. Those would be useful, too.

According to jacadcaps, bzip2 and DMS should be supported by the MorphOS XAD system out of the box:

    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=8371&forum=9&start=5

The output of xadlibinfo contains the following lines (among many more) here:

    Code:
    Amiga Standard FS | 8000 | 13 | 1.2 | FILESYS,FREE(FI)
    DMS | 9000 | 13 | 1.12 | FILE,DISK,FREE(FI,DI,TI,TEXT)
    DMS SFX | 9001 | 13 | 1.12 | FILE,DISK,FREE(FI,DI,TI,TEXT)
    BZip2 | 5045 | 13 | 1.9 | FILE,FREE(FI)
    BZip2 SFX | 5046 | 13 | 1.9 | FILE,NOCHECKSIZE,FREE(FI)

"should be supported" does not mean it does. Maybe it is a question of versions but it does not work with e.g. tar.bz2: http://aminet.net/package/dev/src/xad_bzip2. I copied the bzip2.040 from the 68k 7z from Aminet to the client directory and with that I cannot open e.g. annotate-src-3.0.1.tar.bz2 from AROS archives. But uncompressing works (context menu item below that). I also tried many disk images in ADF and DMS and none of them works to open as a directory. So in general I can say it does not work. Maybe only in some special situations.

If some file is supported through xadunfile command but not through Ambient archive browser (i.e by doubleclicking it), then it's down to XADFilesystem.

I believe bz2, dms, adf clients aren't supported by XADFilesystem (for some reason, they must have a particular subtype).

Why is there a difference? This is confusing to the user, even more when a dev says "it is supported" but a user finds out "no, it doesn't work".

    - Abiword or something like that (Yes, I know scriba, but that is useless)

Yes, please support airport in a future release and someone bring us a good text program (neither Scriba nor Cinnamon Writer are sufficient).
And I would like to know more about the filetypes problems that I talked about. Can this be investigated?

I have a very simple request that I hope finds its way into the next release:

If a USB mouse is attached give an option to turn off the touchpad.

A quick fix that would save lots of corrections...

    Thanks,

    Matt

There's no issue about filetypes. And you can always bind actions for 7zip, bz2 and so on to any action you like.
The actual issue you want to be investigated is about some xad clients not supported by xadfilesystem.

I have an OWB related wish:
It could bo really good to have a setting for default zoom factor.
The default zoom level results very small fonts on my PB.

Did you download WebCore fonts (with the supplied 'download fonts' script)? The default settings with these fonts are usually big enough.

It is a filetype problem because the type of a file does not change just because a different client (Ambient, XAD, MS Windows, whatever) treats it. So it would be nice to know about it what can be done.

    BTW:

If A works but B not, then why is it a problem of A? It looks like Ambient is missing something instead.

It's not about the type of the file... It's about the configured action. The filetype is properly recognized, and the configured doubleclick action is to open it through XADFS (which again, can be freely changed by the user).
Unfortunately, XADFS doesn't handle some (rare) archive types, like bzip2 or dms, which is why it shows a blank lister.
So again, the proper solution is to fix XADFS, not Ambient, which has nothing to do with that. In the meanwhile, you can always configure another doubleclick action in mimetype settings for these problematic archive types.

Except you're confused about what is A here: xadunfile directly uses xad.library and it handles bz2/dms properly (maybe dms actually needs xadundisk, in fact).
XADFS is ANOTHER component (i.e not A): it's a handler that acts as a filesystem, which uses xad.library. And the problem lies in the way it uses it for some particular clients somehow.

Thanks for the explanation, now I understand. Can we hope for a fixed XADFS in a nearby future? It would make handling those archives much easier. DMS and such are useful for exchanging disks to old machines and bz2 and such are a standadrd format of today's world.

For me, A was XAD (in general) and B was Ambient.

    Comments like this frustrate me.
Claus has, at its core, a very good program in Cinnamon Writer.
Under MorphOS, it has been my default text editor since he released the beta.

Which brings me to this question.
What are you doing to help a developer?
I know my coding skills are rusty and poor enough that the few possible project I've looked at have been too intimidating.
And for the last few decade I have been focusing on keeping up to date (and probably I little more knowledgeable than the average chump) on hardware.

But, when I can, I try to offer what support I can to developers.

Right now, Cinnamon Writer's author has a donated system, but no OS key.
    Don't think he's accomplished enough?
It's got to be a lot harder trying to develop a program when you have to cycle your machine off every 30 minutes.

And I am pretty close to strapped (as far as cash goes) right now.
I have multiple projects here,(only one is even distantly related to an Amiga like system).
But, in the coming year, I plan to do more.

So folks, like I said, what are you doing?

Not what do you want, but are you willing to help make it so?

Add "to me" if that makes you less frustrated. For me they are not sufficient. They contain too many bugs, they crash too often and their püossibilities are too limited. Yes, I "can" import ODF but they look completely different from the original docuemnts. If you just type some text then it might be okay for some people. But wexchanging documents is vital, I think. And what I do? I tell the authors about it. I write them mails about the problems and what could be done better.

Sure, there is obviously a great deal of room for improvement.
But the version we have is still a beta.
And having a base to start from is vital.
Word processing programs are much more complicated than they were when the Amiga was current.

So, even if "tell the authors" is the limit to the extent of your involvement, hey I just every little bit helps.

snapshot Shell and RemoteShell windows. There are no snapshot functions for those two windows although they are MUI windows as all the others. It it very annoying to always have to resize them and move them around.
