I figured the joystick part of the mame thread deserved a thread of it's own.

Seriously, I have just got a PC control pad to work on my pegasos and with mame.
I think when realstar posted his instructions (in the other thread, and I will quote in just a moment for reference), there was a different verson of the NewLowLevel.library than what is now on the amithlong site (oh yeah, I need to try it there too!). The newer version right now is limited to the amithlon site
VMC, but the version I have gotten to work is from the Aminet. It seems the new version will not let the user input a value for the addressing.

Ok, here are some quick instructions:
1. Download Guido's lowlevel.library replacement
2. unpack and install the lib, prefs program and
"c" commands to appropriate locations.
3. add "gameportenable" to your user startup sequence
4. reboot, now in a shell type:
gameportfind $EFFF0000 $EFFFF220
follow the instructions and it should give
you an address if it finds your gamepad.
5. start the prefs program and enter the address
into unit 1 and unit 2
6. test the gamepad in the prefs program, you may
have to change the x or y axis etc. you can
test all the buttons and joypad motion here too.
7. when you start a game that uses lowlevel.library
you need to circle the pad a few times to
calibrate the range of motion before playing
8. use the JOYPAD flag on Mame to enable gamepad
support (not sure if maguila can do this currently?)
That should be enough to get your gamepad going,
works fine here with a "Laing#1" gameport pad with
4 buttons, don't push the auto fire buttons when
doing the "gameportfind" either.
For your last question:
The review is just referring to the fact that many
programs will not start without lowlevel.library
being present on the machine, but Maguila and MOS
Mame will... :)
My gamepad would not work until I changed "Calibrate" to "Fixed". It did, however, let me make all the changes before setting it to fixed.
To Guido: You R00L!
To realstar: Thanks for posting the instructions!
(oh yeah, I have to fix MAMEcons... oops.)
