After months of hard work the Gentoo Foundation are proud to bring you Gentoo 2004.3. 2004.3 brings you several new features, such a much improved genkernel (for automatically building a working kernel) and cascading profiles. On the Pegasos side of things the LiveCD has become easier to boot, you simply type "boot cd boot/pegasos" in SmartFirmware to get going.
To upgrade an existing installation simply run "rm -f /etc/make.profile; ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-ppc-2004.3 /etc/make.profile"
The complete release information can be found here.

    Has the release of the Gentoo more to do with MorphOS than the statement of David & Stephan ?!

    I don't understand why this information is still not mentionned on this site while we publish news about a new release of Gentoo...

    No Leo, it does not. We will also appear on this page shortly:

    The fact is MorphOS benefits from this sort of situation. Take David Holm for example, who made the post. He has been a solid supporter and developer for the Pegasos. He was even recently paid for some of his past work. :-o David, has also assisted us in some interesting ways with MorphOS. The more developers there are with machines the more that might get interested in MorphOS. It is a good thing.

    R&B :-)

    P.S. Check the other threads for news and stop speculating!

    Gentoo Rules. I already tried it on PPC (Peg2+Mac) and x86 (AthlonXP2Ghz), and it was really awesome. It's really something Linux should be. Too bad compilations take so much time, so i'm still on Debian... (and MorphOS...:-) ) But nothing is decided yet! :-D

    Nice. Our whole (quite big;) network is working on Gentoo based servers and routers. Anyone can tell me how long it take to compile Gentoo's base on Pegasos II/G4?

    @opi:
    It has been a while since I did a complete install from sources so I couldn't give you an accurate estimate. But we also have binary CDs for people who want to get up and running in a matter of 1-2 hours.

    @DHolm

    I'd quote my friend, Kierzko, who happends to be a sysadmin at my work: ,,Running Gentoo from binary packages render it sensless''. I don't mind to run it that way (but if I'd had to do that, I'd switch to Debian;-) but I was curious about how long it would take (becasue, thanks to Kierzko, I saw quite an amout of Gentoo boxes being installed that way. From PII to dual PIV)

    It takes just over 24 hours to build Linux, X and KDE from scratch on a G4 :)

    I did it on Monday :)
