It looks that the navy already did some efforts:

In keeping with the U.S. government's decision to go "All Windows NT", the missile cruiser Yorktown, first of the Navy's "Smart Ship" program has been fitted with a Windows NT network for all its control system. So far, practically every time the Yorktown has put to sea, it has gone dead in the water and had to be towed back to port due to failure of the NT servers. Were this a combat situation, it would give a whole new meaning to "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD is the common failure mode for Windows NT computers).

    ...

"According to the Register the US Navy has ordered 260 XServe servers running Yellow Dog Linux from Terra Soft Solutions. Terra Soft is the only reseller allowed to resell Apple hardware with a third-party operating system installed. The XServes will be modified by a unnamed third-party and will be running a custom kernel. The XServes are destined for US Navy submarines and will be used for real-time image processing. I do wonder how many will be installed on each sub, though. Are we talking clustering here? I didn't even know the USN was running Linux on front-line ships."

    You can try this:

    https://www.pegasosppc.com/store.php

Or you could try to take part in the
    PPC-Developer-Offer of Freescale/Genesi
where a system is offered for free when
you give a monthly report ...

Thats a load of crap about the Yorktown getting towed back all the time. The servers have nothing to do with the combat or navigation of the ships. Its used as an information system as any LAN is in any corprate setting. We use them for email, word, outlook schedules ect. nothing more.

Now I would love to see a linux based Pegasos server and workstations with star office or open office!!

As for using NT and not UNIX it depends on what you are doing. The system I work on uses a UNIX base on a custom build rack system to run the software to controll the launch control units for the MK 41 VLS missile system. Our Navagation and plotting systems on some ships run a program on a sun system running Solaris, several of the Aegis combat and fire controll systems are using a simular unix based system that my systems use. NT is also used in smart ships (a test platform to test the reduced manning of ships) to monitor ships engenering systems, but not controll them. Its just about a failed test and will be going to a UNIX based system in the future.

Want to learm more about one part of my system I work on? This is one generation back from the most current, but gives some neat information. Its as unclassified as I can share with you.
