Archive : : A new MorphOS/Pegasos review: From Genesi(s) To Revelation
Posted By: DoctorMorbius_FP. on 2004/6/2 15:21:06
This is the title of a long review written by DoctorMorbius_FP (Fulvio Peruggi), and now is kindly hosted here on MorphZone:

Pegasos Review

Several features of MorphOS and the Pegasos are described. The compatibility with old Amiga software is extensively discussed, as well as the new software that appeared recently or is in the finalization phase. The target of the review are "normal" users, rather than "geeks". However, experienced users will find some interest in this lengthy article.

    That, my friend, is an awesome review. Well thought out, not overbearing. Informative and informal.

    Congratulations,

    Steve

    @JKD
    Thank you very much for your comment here, and also for the thread you opened on Amiga.org with laudatory sentences. I'm very happy that at least one reader has appreciated my review. (I hope you are the first and not the last... :-) ).

    @Miki060
    I forecast some nights without sleep to satisfy your announcement of the Italian version... :-(

    @Targhan
    I hope you decide before the announcement goes too much below the others... :-D

    Well...it answers in abundance the top 10 questions I've ever been asked about MorphOS by anyone familiar with the Amiga. I'm pointing everyone I can to it, since it's such a great job and even handles the politics very well...erm...politically :D

    This review must be the most comprehensive and nicely done (including handcrafting it in MorphOS) that I've ever come across. Magnificient job, dottore!

    Dear Doctor,

    We just wanted to add a public word of thanks. It is a comprehensive, informative (even educational!), and much appreciated review. Grazie molto! :-D

    To take a page from the last Chapter of your book, "evil" is LIVE spell backwards. We are patiently waiting the revelation and the final judgment...;-)

    R&B :-)

    P.S. Over the weekend we will write to you directly with a more thoughtful response!

    I would like to thank all the people that expressed their positive opinions about my review here and in many other places. Actually there are more comments elsewhere than here, but this is not strange: MorphZone is not a place of lengthy sterile polemics but the centre of quick and constructive discussions. I'm also receiving a number of e-mail messages: I will reply to everybody, be patient!

    I must also thank many persons that defended my work against the criticisms of the well-known trolls that infest other news sites. There were very few things to criticise in my article, because I was very careful and avoided any direct comparison with AmigaOS/AmigaOne. However there are guys who always split hairs, on purpose, just to show their faulty logic and discuss their weak ideas again and again... These persons think that repeating "ad infinitum" the same statements gives a higher force to their opinions. Instead they constantly annoy every sane person, and are even unable to understand that their "screams" actually advertise the opinions of their "enemies". So, I extend my thanks also to the trolls.

    Furthermore, my very special thanks to...

    ...oGALAXYo, who started a thread on OSNews and defended my work there and on ANN. You have already done a great job for our community, and I hope that you succeed quickly in your ambitious browser project (then, after Martin Blom, you will be our second "saint" :-) ).

    ...Andrea Maniero, who is going to complete a hard job: the translation of my review for Italian readers. Now Andrea knows so well the contents of the review that he is able to cite sentences that dispel the trolls... :-P

    ...And at last, not in order of importance, Mr. Bill Buck (and, of course, the inseparable Mrs. Raquel Velasco) who kindly expressed their appreciation for my work.

    I've got an idea...

    I could give DoctorMorbius_FP access to the nSections part of MorphZone, and allow him an area of publication "The Doctor's Office," with links to his review, and any other article he decides to write?

    Does that sound good, and Doc... Are you up to it?

    Well... Ehm... I have no words to express my feeling...

    When I started my run against the time (the review grew explosively outside the limits I forecast, so it seemed to finish never), I was driven mainly by frustration caused by ten years of slow degradation of the Amiga environment (technology, software, and people). But, when I continued the review, I was driven by the enthusiasm and satisfaction that MorphOS/PegasosII were able to give me in the last few months.

    Now I'm working on the final revision of the Italian translation of the review. And I have some ideas to improve and expand it (more snapshots, more descriptions of programs and utilities), just to reach a larger target. In fact, now I think that we can advertise the PegasosII among lost Amigans and alien people by means of the review.

    I was always almost unable to explain, to curious people, the strange reasons of my very personal choice to use an Amiga in the last ten years, and a Pegasos now. Too many things should be said to create a consistent explanation, so often I renounced and simply said (or let them to think) that "I use this esoteric computer because I'm a bit crazy!". I think that many others in our community had this kind of experience, often or at least sometimes. And now I understand that I can finally explain my point of view by saying briefly: "My reply would be too long and confused, so please read this review and you will find all the answers!"

    This idea was expressed first by JKD (Steve) just in this thread. And maybe we could suggest to all the MorphZone people that they can do the same, i.e. actively find as many potentially interested persons as they can, and point them to the review. If, in such a way, my work could attract other people in our community, I would be very happy.

    So, what else can I say to Targhan and Mr. Buck? Thank you very much! Of course I accept all your proposals and will do my best! However, please note that I already have my scientific/didactic/administrative work to do at the University, so writing reviews, articles, and meditations on the Pegasos can be only my second, volunteer job. I cannot promise that I will be able to write new things with a constant cadence, but at least I will try.

    (I also have some new ideas that will send privately, via e-mail, to Mr. Buck in the next few days.)
