MorphZone : : Developer Feedback Day
Posted By: Targhan. on 2004/4/14 0:40:22
Staring at another news item in your browser? Listening to tunes with your favorite MP3 player? How about watching a movie, playing a game, using a database, or simply writing an email?

Well, let that developer know that you are using their software! Find the About Box in the menu of your applications, and send those software authors an email! Don't stop there either! Write the artists who made your favorite icons or backdrops! Send an instant message IRCops, and in general let those folks know you appreciate thier efforts.

April 14 (GMT) is now Developer Feedback Day!

Day in and day out, developers often don't see feedback from their efforts, saving for the day of a new release. Believe it or not, even updates don't always ensure feedback.

All of us are guilty of procrastination, "I'll email the author tommorrow," but tomorrow never gets here. Well, I ask everyone to take an extra minute today to open the about box--right after starting your software, and email that author!

Old or new, try their email address, at least you will know you've tried to show some appreciation. Who knows? Your effort might get an update, a native port, or even save a developer from depression! Is it an old 68k app? Write them anyway!

Whatever software you use, please take the time to provide them a little feedback today! They deserve it, and YOU might be the one to benefit!

If this news isn't on a website, please submit it! C'mon folks rally the troops and throw a "Thank You" party!

I think this idea sucks. :-D

It reminds me of two things: First of all, the "Gnome love day" pops to mind, which is some kind of self-deceptive theater; Gnome is falling behind technically, and you need to be member of a "community" and/or weed to like it. The second thing is, it gives me the bad taste of flogging the proverbial dead horse. Give developers real reasons to invade the MorphOS platform all on their own, but don't try it by stirring up sentiments about the good old Amiga days or something like that... it HAS to stand on its own feet some day, the sooner the better.

It has less to do with luring in old amiga developers, and more to just flat out tell the current developers that your using their stuff.

It's a simple complaint I've heard time and time again from several developers: no feedback. Heck, even telling a developer the whatsohaveyou crashes and you can't use it is better than no feedback at all.

Sure, a simple feedback mail can often move some mountains, but this has always been the case, and freelancers suffer from missing feedback on all platforms alike. I wouldn't feel particularly adulated from an organized Love Parade. :-)

 well, maybe an organized love-fest seems a bit over the top, but I think everyone, myself included, have kind of gotten out of the habit of even trying to communicate with the authors of software. The whole monolithic MS world has gotten folks used to being simply consumers. This is also known as the you take what we feed you syndrome.

I'll admit, a "love fest" is a little campy, but if a few users become more inclined to regularly give feedback, then the Feedback Day actually did some good.
