MorphOS : : Official MorphOS IRC channel moves to Libera Chat
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2021/5/25 7:15:13

As some of you may have read over the past days, there has been an ownership dispute over the Freenode network. The IRC network has been used by MorphOS and many other projects over the past decades as a platform for discussion and support. The dispute led to the exodus of most former Freenode staff from the network and the founding of a new network: Libera Chat

In light of these events, the official MorphOS IRC channel has been migrated and can now be accessed by visiting #morphos on irc.libera.chat. The old Freenode channel will stay online for the time being but could be closed down by the Freenode owners at any time.

For more information regarding the Freenode situation, here is a summary: Freenode IRC resign en masse after takeover by Korea’s crown prince (Ars Technica)

On a related subject, AmIRC 3.8 is out with experimental SSL support (+ Libera Chat and others added to the default servers list).

Quite unfair competition from Freenode's side :( They desperately try to force users to stay on their network and we can't advertise where we have really moved.... sigh. Now it really sounds like a good move to go to Libera, although it's annoying that everyone might not get informed...

Apparently freenode did this for over 700 channels, not just ours.

If anyone is still has presence there, it's time to move on to better alternatives. Libera Chat is lovely, but there are other alternatives as well.

Yeah. Do not stick on the old network.

Delete its configuration and forget about it to signal other users it is dead. Hopefully the use of forums and other websites will spread the word.

Mostly important: Do not trust any information on the old channels. Not from bots, users or topic. Since they already changed channel topics, even users (registered or not) with known nicks may be fake already to keep you there or redirect you into fake channels.

Do not use the same passwords for your new accounts! This of course is generally a good advice and practice, but in this case mandatory.

Easier said than done, amirc requires a nickname / username / realname to even connect to a server.

Because my nickname is not registered on libera, amirc just sits forever saying : "Connected. Now doing login ..."

    @MoerBoer

I suspect that your network connection or networking equipment might somehow be responsible for your problems.

There's currently 22500 users connected to the network so it clearly is working for most.

I did it with amirc following the intructions of the link so I suspect Piru is right.

    I can't run discord on MorphOS.... ;)

Nice to have an IRC channel still available that we can use whatever ancient machine to connect to. :)

Maybe because Discord is even worst than what happened to freenode regarding privacy concerns?

And these proprietary chat solutions come and go, but IRC stays forever :)

These modern programs also tend to be quite resource hungry... I don't like the idea that a chat/communication program, that you usually would like to keep running on the background constantly, would make a noticeable load to the system.

You know I've been on the "old" network plenty, so nothing wrong with my connection. Even chatted to you a couple of times.

Not sure what is going on. Will try and investigate
