MorphOS : : PowerMac G5 Port Update
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2012/12/26 10:58:19
Harry "Piru" Sintonen provided information regarding the status of the MorphOS port for Apple's PowerMac G5:

Everything is progressing nicely. Bigfoot also did some preliminary benchmarking using the same LAME (13 seconds) and MPlayer (49 seconds) benchmarks as used here. (This is with the 2.0 GHz G5.)

I have a Dual 2.5 Ghz G5 PowerMac I bought in September 2004 and was wondering if I can use it with MorphOS in the future? It needs repair and I was just going to get rid of it but if MorphOS will support it maybe I'll get it fixed.

The Dual 2.3GHz G5 PowerMac is a later design with a single "Dual Core" G5 CPU, not two separate G5 CPU's, like the Dual 2.0GHz G5 that was first sent to BigFoot for the porting project, or the Dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac that was sent out two days ago (also to BigFoot in South Africa). I don't know if that will make any difference in supporting the 2.3GHz G5 model, but to be safe, I would suggest that you do not buy any model of G5 PowerMac, until one of the MorphOS Dev. Team members has confirmed that it will be supported.

I must apologize for the delay in getting the 2nd G5 PowerMac shipped to BigFoot, but I hope that it will not delay the completion of the porting work to the G5 PowerMac models. Since Piru already has MorphOS3.x running on his Dual 2.5GHz G5 PowerMac, and since all Dual 2.5GHz PowerMac models are Liquid Cooled, just like the Dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac that I have just sent to BigFoot, it appears that the work BigFoot and the others helping him on this porting work have done, is already working on at least some of the Liquid Cooled models of the G5 PowerMac.

I hope that Piru and other members of the MorphOS Dev. Team will post more benchmark results, to show just how fast MorphOS3.x is going to be on the G5 PowerMac's. :-D
