Events : : PowerDev #8
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2010/9/28 7:37:20
Geit reports: "Here is a collection of images taken at the PowerDev #8 in September 2010 in our convention center. PowerBook and PowerMac systems running MorphOS were shown. Even the old PowerMac with 400 Mhz and Rage128 graphics card makes a good impression of the usability. MorphOS simply is fast on any hardware. PowerMac support will be released with MorphOS 2.6. Exit

Of course we had a wide range of hardware running. Pegasos1, Pegasos2, Efika, yA1, AmigaOne, A2000 and several MacMinis were used during the meeting. Beside hardware there also was the software. A sneak preview of the new Ambient panel system was shown which has some quite unique features. These new panels will replace the old ones in future Ambient versions. Also, a sneak preview of MagicAction was shown. It is a MorphOS adapted version of the well known Automator. Furthermore, the new MorphOS scanner application and driver system Scandal was demoed to the audience by using an Epson scanner. It is a rather nice piece of software and even the transparency unit worked.

We had alot of fun and interesting topics to discuss during the entire meeting. And it was nice to see several new software products getting ready for being released. A small museum with old hardware was shown at the entrance. There was even a Busch 2090 4 Bit computer (CPU: TMS 1600) with 768 byte of system memory, which worked the whole 72 hours without a crash. Not bad for a 27 year old computer system!

Another highlight was MorphOS playing 3D movies on the Pegasos2 system using a 3D display and proper glasses."

Running the Efika in FullHD-resolution is not quite the same as playing back a 1080p-video ;)

Great report & pics. Thanks Geit.

    Just to avoid confusion:

These panels will NOT be included with 2.6, actually it's not even certain wether they will ever be accepted into the official MorphOS/Ambient release.

On the other side I hope to see them included with 2.7 :bloons:

Out of the MorphOS-team only Geit had a chance to test an earlier version, he and Pega-1 saw it last weekend and Fab knew that I was fiddling with that stuff, while noone has yet seen the sources (probraly for the best  ).

    Whats missing:
Transfering some MUI-classes from the shortlived standalone app "CrappleDock" into Ambient-style.

Reading and writing config-files with Ambient's "Prefspool" instead of plain text-files.

Fallback for Ambient on non-enhanced display.

    Standart-classes (spaces, seperators etc.)

Bunch of GFX-effects (zipping, highligthing etc)

    Settings with GUI

    Major code cleanup

Getting it approved for inclusion into the official Ambient-CVS.

    Much more ...

[Insane speculation mode]If that mysterious new panels are not for 2.6, then that MUST mean that they don't want to hold back the imminent release of 2.6 Hmm... [/[Insane speculation mode]

Those panels won't be ready for quite some time, probraly not even this year.

Nice! Thanks for posting all those pictures. It's good to get a look at a work in progress.

What potential is there for upgrading the graphics card in older G4 powermacs?

NIce report, and great to see so many people having fun! It's interesting to read your comments about those panels, it seems we love talking about things that aren't ready (yet/ever)!

powermac with 400Mz ... so if I understand this well, more or less any cheap powermac will do ? So if i pick up a Powermac G4 867 I soon can run Morphos ? That's great news, I sold my Efika with license a year ago because I wasn't too happy with it... but a machine that is more or less comparable to a PegII would be sufficient for me.

Yeah really cool meeting. This is not only the amiga spirit but the Morphos spirit! good to see 'a bunch of smart guys' having fun and doing their passion... we are grateful to have such good developers for our niche OS :)

Also nice to see that the ODW program has a nice impact on Morphos development!

Yes, as long as it has both a G4 CPU and an AGP slot.

I can buy a G4 800Mhz Quiksilver .... As far as I can tell it has AGP ? Anyway ... seller wants 50? for it. And it seems to be well enough equiped: DVDwriter, Zip 250, 768MB, keyboard and mouse.

So you can expect me to buy a license when 2.6 arrives.

Yes, all Quicksilver models have AGP.

I just got home with it and it seems I am lucky: a Radeon 7500 with 32MB ... altough not the fastest, I can use it with MorphOS I think ?

I do have a spare 9000 and a 9250 for PC ... I suppose I can get one of these flashed but I have to look in to that.

Anyway, my 50Euro Powermac is awaiting MorphOS.

Now another question, does the MohpOS registration still rely on the motherboard's data ? If I put in a Sonnet 1.6GHz or something similar will it mess with my keyfile ?

    Yes, see http://www.morphos-team.net/hardware.html

Yes, MAC address of onboard Ethernet controller.

I'd find it strange if a CPU upgrade card interfered with your onboard Ethernet controller ;-)

Yes, although I think speed will be not so much an issue like the amount of VMEM.

"I do have a spare 9000 and a 9250 for PC ... I suppose I can get one of these flashed but I have to look in to that. "

Good idea, 64 MB VMEM is a very good idea for MorphOS 2.x.

"Anyway, my 50Euro Powermac is awaiting MorphOS. "

    Congratulations :-)

Don't think so, MorphOS is not Windows :-P The only relevant data should be the MAC of your Powermac.

I wasn't sure anymore what exactly the keyfile was looking for ... if it's only the MAC address then there will be no problem when upgrading the cpucard.

About pci-cards ... whatever card is compatible with MorphOS in a Pegasos will be (theoretically) work in the powermac ? USB 2.0, Soundcard, ... ?

Yes, MAC address of onboard Ethernet controller.

I know of computers in which the MAC address is actually set by the operating system. That was a shocker to me, as I previously thought that every single ethernet chip has a different number burnt into it...

All network chipsets support setting the MAC address pretty much. Nothing special there.

Very early Peg1s (April-less ones IIRC) don't even have a real MAC address in their ethernet controller. To run registered MorphOS 2.0 on them you need to bind the license to the MAC address of a PCI network card.
