SceneCON 2007

SceneCON is an annual meeting of underground computer artists who are members of the famous demo scene.  With SceneCON, the organizers aim to follow the two decades old tradition of demo scene parties in Hungary. Yet, with a bit of a twist. This years party was held from the 16th until the 17th of June, 2007. Among its highlights was an extensive demonstration of bplan's EFIKA miniature mainboard running various flavours of Linux as well as a work-in-progress version of MorphOS 2.0.

Luckily, the presentation was captured on video. The entire presentation has a total length of nearly an hour with MorphOS 2.0 being featured in the last 14 minutes of it. You may watch it by clicking one of the following links.

I don't like it AT ALL! Mos2.0 presentation is done very badly. All we can see was transparent windows. What about Sputnik? Or mail program? Some speed tests? Maybe some game shown like robin hood? Where were 3d layers demonstrated?

I never heard somebody talk about an OS for so long in my LIFE! I don't speak Hungarian, but I can't IMAGINE what he talked about. I mean you can talk about the hardware for a couple minutes, and then talk about the software for a couple minutes, and then maybe have a go at Birdie Shoot or FuhQuake, but what do you talk about MorphOS and Efika all by yourself for a HALF HOUR! ;)

I didn't really understand what transparent windows were about and figured they were eye candy that was going to consume a bunch of CPU cycles, but now I can see how they might be useful, and they didn't seem to be very slow.

Good job guys, how did you get everyone to stay seated for an entire hour? :-D

Shame about Linux not booting immediately! :-D

I think we need a competition to see who can make the most exciting EFIKA demonstration. An hour is too long, cut it down to 5 - 15 minutes max.

I think the real point is not the transparency itself, but the fact that parts of the GUI is now handled by the 3D accelerated GFX chip instead of CPU = no CPU cycles at all (not many at least)! That is usefulness beyond eye candy IMHO. :-)

Well, long speeches are not uncommon, in one of the presentations CUAZ prepared in Spain we spent various hours showing Smartfirmware, explaining how it works, MorphOS, we showed apps, we showed MOL, we showed OS4 too...
    http://www.morphzone.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=291

I wouldn't make 300Km to attend a 15 minute speech, so I prefer at least an hour. If you put a video online 10 minutes would be more than enough, of course, but a speech can be much longer.

I guess that Chain-Q was very busy organizing the event so he couldn't prepare the presentation better. It's a pity he didn't show more programs running but I'm sure he didn't show more stuff because he simply didn't have time. Remember that he also has real life work, codes FreePascal and AFAIK codes parts of MOS2.0... I'm sure he'll show more programs in his next presentation.

I think that if some MOS user knew such an event was going to take place he could have helped Charlie passing him a usb pendrive with MOS1.4.5 programs to show like Sputnik, MPlayer, ANR, YAM... so remember next time you hear about a presentation is taking place *offer your help* instead of waiting that someone else does all the work.

Few things to answer various comments, plus add a few facts:

Yes we know about the problems, and we're not proud of them. Most of them are even mentioned in the video. First of all i agree that the presentation turned out to be too long, we planned it up to 40 minutes max, with ~15 mins to linux, plus 10 mins MorphOS, the rest is hardware, OF and the blabla. The problem was, we ran out of time preparing ourselves. Peter didn't got the prepared and fast Gentoo image in time (as it's mentioned in the video), and i had no time to put together an useable MorphOS on the Efika before the presentation (due to the fact that i was the lead organizer of the whole event, and that took more time than expected, even if it wasn't the first event i organized). For example, I only managed to setup transparency approx. _TEN_ minutes before the presentation started. And since we had Genesi to support us, so we just couldn't cancel the presentation. We were doomed to work what we had. The results are quite visible.

Another thing: The MorphOS boot time on Efika is roughly comparable to a Pegasos. I haven't measured it, but my Efika is not booting longer than my Pegasos II/G4. I boots definitely A LOT faster than a PowerUP machine. I admit that this was amongs the most interresting part of the demonstration, and the boot time had a great feedback from the attendance. But everything was against us, and the camera recording the event ran out of battery and tape... That's how sh#?t happens. Sorry.

The funny thing, since the presentation, i prepared myself a fully useable MorphOS on the Efika, with all important stuff installed (see some screenshots here), plus a totally eyecandy Linux system, with AIGLX, compiz and all such stuff. So lets hope the next presentation (which will take place soonish) will be much more interresting for everyone. Still, since many people on the party were not familiar with MorphOS, and alternative hardware at all, according to the feedback they've found our presentation quite interresting.

    - as mentioned in the video, sputnik wasnt installed on that system and there was also no net connection to that efika.
robin hood is a commercial game, i dont think that chain has got it (yes, theres a demo i know, but do you think that a 7-8 years old game running slow on mos is attracting anyone?) . the 3d layers was demonstrated, that was the transparent windows part. (you also didnt read the subtitles i guess).

and what speed test do you mean?

btw i've seen many of chain's demonstartions and this wasnt the worst:)))

I hope it will be soon. From this video, MOS has nothing except transparent windows.

Does MOS have ability that if some program is opened (let say simplemail), an icon would appear in dockbar? Not just desktop icon which we should chase in case we need simplemail de-iconified?

English is not my native. I hope you understood the question.

It would be nice if iconified icons would appear in dockbar (or whatever it's name is)

Everybody could make 10min of time for installation.

I did. I was thinkig on some 3d games like wipeout, quake, doom... There are more, can't remember now.

ie. play mp3 and see if there are slow-downs, start 10 programs, test blender, move screens around, timing of loading programs, iconifing, de-iconifing... Most important, watching DVD or divx videos in full screen

ChainQ, I was just kidding really, about the length (as one can see by the winkie). That's great to be able to discuss it and I see a lot of it was responding to questions too.

I don't really think Efika is any "step backwards" from Pegasos either. It is a step closer to the kind of computer I personally would like to have. Here in this thread people comment that it boots quickly and Granny linked the WipeOut 2097 video that shows it playing that 3D racing game well. So it can do a lot of the things it needs to be able to do, and we are still finding out just what its capabilities are.

What about a demo of MOS2.0 with a Pegasos2?, I guess EFIKA dont have Altivec, so the speed tests may not worth to see :-P, but if we can see something that can realy run with altivec suport.

No, *you* want a computer where a DVD drive can be attached to. SCNR ;-)

BTW, it would be great if MOS2.0 had something similar to "Expose" of OSX. It would be very comfortable to be able to choose which window pass to the front watching all the windows in small size. I hope MOS2.0 can do it with the new system...
