Official MorphOS Team Clarifications

During the last few days, several issues were discussed on MorphZone with
regards to MorphOS and related topics.

PearPC

While we acknowledge that PearPC is a very interesting project, we currently
have to focus on other more important things for our own project, and we do not
have the resources to actively support MorphOS on PearPC.

MorphOS Club

Many people (us included) consider the "club" concept in this community as
tainted, and therefore we do not wish to officially endorse such a thing.

However, if someone else wants to offer extra services under a "club"
initiative, we have nothing against it, but we would like to remain
unaffiliated.

MorphOS Payment

There is no gain in discussing/announcing any such decision before the next
product is ready to be released.

MorphOS Features

We work on a major OS release update and the name 1.5 is probably not
appropriate enough to describe the differences.

We do not intend to announce or discuss new features in the public because
we cannot guarantee their ETA, and do not want to build up unwarranted
expectations or dependencies.

MorphOS Release Dates

The MorphOS development is still ongoing despite some speculations out there,
and we hope to be able to make a release as soon as possible, however we do not
have unlimited resources available to us in our effort, so do not expect
miracles.

MorphOS Mailinglist

Due to an unfortunate harddisk failure all data was lost, and as a result of
this the mailinglist will remain offline until we can recover the user
database, and start up a new mailinglist (which you should be automatically
subscribed to, and notified of).

Thank you for your attention,

The MorphOS Team

Could you be a little more precise!?!
When will MOS1.5 released? Next month, in 2-3 month, end of this year, or next year :-?

Two questions to the MOS-Team official representatives:

Let's imagine MOS1.5 (or whatever version number you decide to apply to it) is released in a year from today:

.Will you still give no information at all about the progress of the OS ?
.Can we hope one (or more) updates before it's released ?

    Leo.

Althought even I'd like to have such, I hope the core devs will refain from generating hype and expectations - just as they've stated above.

Being a small effort compared to the mainstream OSes out there, their policy sounds professional. IMHO

I think they had the possibility to be more precise, but they didn't wanted to be. Be sure as soon as the TODO list of the next release gets short enough, we'll know more. Personally i expected next MOS release this summer, but now i'm not so sure about this. I think i'm going to expect it next year. If it gets released sooner, i'll be more happy. :-)

Anyway, i'm complettely agree with MOS team, and agree with warface in the meaning that this policy is very professional, and i'm happy to see that the true leaders of our platform are busy to do something more useful than generating flames or spreading rumours.

On the contrary, I've seen devastating effects of false timelines, inaccurate status reports, and constant marketing bluffs regarding a well known competitor of MorphOS. The core dev team even made public demonstations of 1.5 - I think we shouldn't expect timelines when a deadline can't be given, due to the nature of tasks left to complete.

    What do you want, then?

Clearly, they don't know when they are going to make the next release.
When you have a complex project it's always a question, "should we
wait for this feature xyz to be ready, or make a release without it?".

@Merko: just a sign that something is being worked on... They must have already implemented a lot of stuff since one year: a progress report would be nice...

I'm not asking for a release date.
I'm not asking for an update (although I would welcome it).
I'm not asking for what they are planning (or not) to do.
    I'm not asking for video/screengrabs.
    ...
I'm even not asking for the name of the (ghost) company wishing to resell MorphOS ;)

Just a small progress report showing what are the most changes/new things that *have been* implemented since a year.
Even if these things may be subject to change over the next months...

Is it too much to ask ?

You see: people are loosing interest, faith, are getting tired of having no information at all... If OS4 team shows far too much grabs,... which meant nothing at that time, MOS-Team shows nothing at all:
=> I think there is a middle between both teams.

    @Morphos-Crew:

If you need a sign that the ppl loose interest even here on MZ
check the easy question of Leon at this thread
    http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=2586&forum=9

It took 11 hours for a first answer ! And the second
question (a question everyone can answer) still 8 ...

We're used to wait for stuff. We can live with 1.4.2,
but a little teasing would not hurt. Something like,
hey look how those new imagebutton class looks cool,
or sth ... a weekly screengrab uploaded here or whatever.
Just a sign that the waiting is worth it.

Where have you been the past months? There was a report from the Sweden user meeting a while back where CISC and bigfoot showed off "MorphOS1.5". They held a speech and mentioned plenty of features which were later summed up on MorphOS-News.de ... You already know about things like the working 3D drivers for certain Radeon cards, etc.

Plus, there was another news post on Morphos-News.de which explained in detail what the new Ambient version will feature.

Is it too much to ask that you check the news archive of MorphOS-News.de and read for yourself what "MorphOS1.5" has to offer?

There is certainly enough information available to decide whether the next MorphOS release will be worth the wait or not.

@jobbo: Nothing was announced... What we know, we know it through bad quality screengrabs where we have to GUESS what has changed, that here there is a new button, that, "wow, isn't it a "mime icon" ?",...

Yes, I read Ambient report/features "list", and that's good. But I was talking about a MOS1.5 General report here...

    What about TCP/IP ? Printing ? New MUI ? new Inuition ? Network drivers (fixes/new ones: Gigabit ?,...) ? New firmware ?
I'm pretty sure it has all changed/improved,...
=> I'd like to here it all about.
I'm asking for a report about what has changed/been improved since one year.

Ah, but what you saw in that case were deliberate attempts to mislead by a certain Managing Partner, someone 'high up' at AInc who had nothing to do with the development and the usual cronies, not from the developers.

Updates from the developers are worthwhile IMO (well, apart from the useless "When it's done!" ones.) ;-)
