Since the PCI slots now work, has anyone tried to run a Voodoo 3 PCI video card in a G5 (I have a 2.0 GHz model I can lay my hands on that I'd like to try this with).

    OK...
    Zero response.
No one else interested in Warp3D apps on a G5?
I guess I will just have to try it and report back.

First I have to drive to the Bronx and pick up the 2.0 GHz G5.
I rather look forward to a trip to NYC.
Its unlike any other place on Earth.

The resolution issue is very valid.
With only 16MB, that could be a problem.
And the Voodoo4 and 5 don't work properly in a Mac.

Oh well, if you wanted to sacrifice your only Radeon card, a 9200 or 9250 could be tried.

Nah, I need atleast 9650 for that sensible sized main monitor.

I forgot that our 9200 drivers only use the first 128MB of vram.
I have a 9600PRO around here somewhere, but the R300s are not Warp3D compatible.

I guess I will just have to stick to lower resolutions.

VMem ain't the issue here, I mean booting a clean install only eats about 60mb so yeah I could live with 128mb.

Hmmm. I have a Radeon 9250 - 128MB I used to use in my Classic. Maybe I should give that a go. :-)

    Will report back.

You need it to be Mac compatible to work in a Mac under MorphOS. Also, you cannot currently use two Radeons at the same time under MorphOS.

Discussing that issue with Frank recently, it does not look like that will be possible anytime soon.

It would be interesting to see if any non-Radeon AGP card works in the G5.
    a

Edit: Looking at the supported AGP cards, I would be inclined to say no.
Even if you resort to 2D only cards, the XGI Volari Duo V8 Ultra is vaporware and the ATI RAGE 128 PRO may not work concurrently with a Radeon (only our driver team would know he answer to that) and is not 4x/8x AGP compatible.

There are reports on the web from people who said they had this card.

Thank you Andreas, that resolves that issue.
If a true 4x AGP Rage 128 PRO exists, it could co-exist with a PCI Radeon.
Or alternately, a PCI card could exist with any AGP Radeon.

As to the Volari Duo V8 Ultra, except for a handful of cards that reached developers and reviewers, I can find no cards in the hands of end users - vaporware.

I just arranged to buy a few ATI Rage 128 PRO 32MB PCI video cards.
    I'm keeping one.
Anyone else who wants one can have it for $9.99 plus shipping.

These do NOT have Mac roms and the only Mac rom I know of is for the Rage128 (not the Rage128 PRO).
I'll let you know if I have any success in getting this up and run in a Mac, but i cannot guarantee their use outside of a PegII.

Well, at least it was listed as available in EU web shops from November 2003 through August 2006 with the lowest price ranging from 180 to 380 EUR.

They could not have sold many, there are none on the used market ATM.

Just to resurect an old inquiry, has anyone managed to get a secondary PCI graphics card to work in a G5?
Personally, I don't even know if the G5 PCI-X models reduce clock speeds to accomodate PCI cards (once they are plugged in).
Although, I assume that if someone has managed to get an SB Live cards d working in one of these (which I also unsure of) then the clock provide to these slots must slow down (as there is no way a PCI card will remain functional at 100 MHz).

I've not done a lot of reading on this, but have started thinking about it lately. After reading this thread, am I reading correct that you say an AGP Voodoo 3 won't work in a G5? I was at the flea market today flipping through a bunch of old cards and saw an AGP Voodoo. I was thinking about buying it just for sh%ts and giggles.

The better solution would be to use a Voodoo 3 in a PCI slot as you suggest. Has no one really tried this? I don't have any Voodoo lying around, so it'd be nice to know before buying one. Voodoo 3 PCI on eBay aren't cheap anymore.

Here's a dumb question. Would it be at all possible, at least in theory, to modify WAZP3D or some other program, to use a Radeon in the PCI slot to do Warp3D computations, but then output to the main AGP connected display? Monitor switches are a pain, and as mentioned Voodoo 3 is very limited in resolutions and VRAM.

Voodoo AGP cards definitely won't work in a G5, the G5 with its 8x slot doesn't support the voltage they run at.
The Voodoo4 or 5 PCI cards would be an interesting option, but due to a driver that caters to the Peg2, these cards do not produce the correct colors in a Mac.

I have a Voodoo3 2000 PCI on hand that I know works in a G4, but I have promised that to a Swedish friend (and I am afraid of damaging it just for the sake of finding out if it works).
I also have a Rage128 PCI card, but it does not current have an Apple rom.
And the Rage128 driver is un-accelerated.

It not a terribly important issue, but I did have dual monitors set up in one of my G4s.

I will probably flash a spare Rage128 this week in order to test that out (I can spare that).

That would allow me (theoretically) to run the X1950Pro AGP card I have on order, and still boot up OSX when I feel like it.

My apologies, as Andreas has succinctly demonstrated, I have been harping on this on more than one front.
When I get home Monday, I will have to try the long delayed Rage128 card.

True, but the Voodoo3 only supports Warp3D.

What we really have to be patient for, is the reworking of the Radeon drivers to allow for multiple cards to be initiated.
    And that may be awhile.
After all, this work is being done in the spare time of the developers.
And with the adoption of the Radeon HD cards, they already have a lot of work cut out for them.

Hey, I can be happy right where I am.
I have a 2.7 GHz G5 system, soon to be equipped with a Radeon X1950Pro video card and a nice sound card.
I can debug and finesse this system for some time to come.

Given what we could have in a couple years, its pretty damned amazing.

If I want a dual display system, I have multiple G4 systems I can combine together to make one.

The real choice will be, do I drag out the old 9000Pro (to reuse the ADP monitor I have sitting unused) or use something more modern in the AGP slot like a 9600 or 9800 (oh and did I mention that, while it taxes the psu, you can run an R400 in a G4)?
Then in a PCI slot, a Voodoo3 or a Rage128 (hmm, wonder if you could use both)?

Its fun having these many options.
And not having to spend a fortune exploring them (like the OS4 community does with their more limited selection). ;)

Edit - Oh, and I guess you all can ask Yasu if the Voodoo3 works in a G5.
My long suffering friend will be the recipient of that card.
I've just got to stop farting around and send it to him.

When (if ever) will we see MorphOS support for two display ports on the same video card? It would be great to get full functionality from some of the R300 & R400 Radeon video cards that have dual display ports on them by being able to display a separate screen to two different monitors at the same time (without using two different video cards).

Also, is the external display port on G4 PowerBooks now working. I think I saw some thread discussing it, but can't find it now.
