Has anyone tried to re-build a Powermac 2.7 or whichever version of G5 into a custom PC case?

Would that even work due to the unique build of the G5 tower?

Maybe it's a total no go/stupid question.. just wondering though, would be nice can't deny that.

Everthing is possible.....but not even Miss Google will something like (lots and lots of hacked PCs in G5-cases though).

Moved a QuickSilver to a PC-Case some time ago, which allready had it's challenges but for G5 it would be worse.

    a) the board is bigger than most (all?) ATX boards
    b) the CPUs need big coolers
    c) those coolers need a lot of airflow (and an LCS for the 2.5 and 2.7GHz)
    d) the PSU .... completly non-standard size and custom pinout. Make place for the orginal ? Build an adapter to ATX ?

    All with what result ?
There is no way you gonna get the airflow as good/controlled as with the orginal case requiring you to use even bigger/more fans or have them running at higher revs. Once you butchered even the biggest case you'd be lucky to end up with more drive-bays then the orginal case.

AS far AS i know the board has to be placed upside down. The power supply
Units habe different voltages then atx standart.
Take a Google search, my opinion - don't try it.

Before builing my custom G4 tower, i looked to do a G5 mod, but this macs seem to by very complex lots of parts, thermal sensors also i read is very piky about that if a thermal sensor is missing the mac will not turn on. I suggest you can build one and get a G4 accelerator theres very fast ones that get even to 2.0 ghz.

    Here is my custom one.

OR... just put up with Apple's excellent, heavy, and nearly indestructible aluminum G5 case.

I have to agree, it would be more work than worth it. You also wouldnt find a case better than the original. Now I have done it the other way and say that was a fun project!

I might do it this year. If I can towerize the best best C128 ever, I can towerize a G5 Power mac :-)

That is cool (converting a desktop to a tower).
And that conversion actually makes me appreciate the C128 more.
But you're going to convert a tower to a ...tower?

Sure, I might do it. Despite how huge the G5 tower is, its expandability is almost nonexistent. I'd like to throw a Catweasel in my G5, but there are exactly zero slots to put a 3.5 and/or 5.25 floppy drive in. The 2x internal 3.5 slots are on the thin side too.

Then there is the aesthetics of the case. I've seen some pretty nice full size PC gaming cases lately.

Valid point about the hard drive bays.
Only having two does seem a bit silly.

I can't find a Catweasel to buy so that is out for me.
And I'd like to move to a PCI-E G5 (if it is ever supported), and that wouldn't have PCI slots.

But man would a G5 in another case be huge.
