My long time goal is to become Windows/OSX/Linux free, and one step on the way is a good Torrent/Magnet program. The ones I've tried so far doesn't really work and no one as far as I can see support Magnet files. I can get MLDonkey 3.1 to start and so, but it doesn't download anything. The rest just doesn't do anything.

Is there any progress in this field? Or some other solution to my problem?

There's the Beehive GUI for torrents.

It doesn't appear to be anywhere on the web anymore, but you can find it in the Chrysalis Pack.

MLDonkey works well, it just doesn't support Magnet links (yet, you might want to bug dake about an update ;-) )

Read this thread to learn more and how to use it:

To download a torrent with MLDonkey:
    1) Launch MLDonkey
    2) Open web browser and go to http://127.0.0.1:4080
    3) Open a new tab and find your torrent.
    4) Save the torrent to: {mldonkey folder}/torrents/incoming
    5) Refresh MLDonkey tab in browser and click on transfers.

If you do not see torrent listed then you should give it a few minutes, if you still don't see it then contrl-c mldonkey window and wait for a proper shutdown (a forced shutdown will cause you to have to reinstall it) and then relaunch it.

Do you have the the 3.1.0 patch applied to the original 3.0.0 folder? you need that.
I am downloading torrents at unbelievable rates and have no issues doing it just like I do in windows. You can check the settings and make sure the max upload/download settings are set to infinite rather than 10k or 50k.

Handle very large files not sure limitation, maybe >2gig files. And leave the speeds alone!

Hmmmm... more than one way to skin a cat.
I just click to download a torrent file and then when asked to save it drop it in the /torrents/incoming folder

I tried to use mldonkey as it said on the manual. But there seems to be (unwritten) stages I need to do first. Thanks everyone, I will try it after work!

Beehive doesn't seem to work. It starts OK but doesn't download anything sadly. MLDonkey now works, even if it's not as fast as I would like. But it's a start :)

[Edit] Scratch that about download speed. I tried a very well seeded file and it downloaded so fast that OWB couldn't keep up (on my G5 2,7 GHz might I add!) and the HDD went nuts. The 100 meg file was downloaded in a couple of minutes, not unlike on Windows. This I must say really surprised me in a really good way :D

Glad you finally got some good speeds.

about MLdonkey, which works great, is the file size limitation linked to the filesystem used ?

    I cannot remember.
I use the IceFilesystem so as not to have that issue.
I thought that the 2gb size limit was due to 3.0.0 and was fixed with 3.1.0.

At least the ReadMe doesn't contain anything about fixed file size limits:

    "News:
    Support of DHT.
Selection of files to download from a torrent.
    "

I hope Dake reads this and consider adding magnet support :-)

And that he finds motivation by me saying: thanks! ;-)

Not saying that magnet support wouldn't be nice, you just don't absolutely need it. You can still download pretty much any magnet torrent contents with software we already have.

    How?

    1)Copy magnet link contents.
2)Go to f.ex. magnet2torrent.com, paste the magnet link and download the .torrent file.
3)Download the torrent as you normally do.

Kind of workaround, but not too complex in my opinion. Tried a few, and all of them worked. Of course this doesn't automatically mean every magnet will work :-)

    Hope this helps.

Well, in order to not have to use any other OS workarounds are the only way a lot of times. But you do need to know them :-)

Thanks for the tip! I will try this :-D

    @Wolf

I thought the author of the 3.1.0 patch said he fixed the 2gb limit in the forums. Not necessarily mentioned in any docs. I will try to download something larger than 2gb.

I already linked to what he said regarding the file size limit, which was the opposite of what you thought it was.
