My G5 2.7 GHz runs mostly around 79,5 C. Even when doing very processing intensive work.

And I will let a professional look at the system and maintain it. Even though it works well right now.

I just booted ASD 2.5.7 on my 15" 1.67GHz Powerbook 5,8 and was greeted with a message saying "This machine is not supported". :(

I'll try 2.6.3 and see if that works.

-0.8 C today. Broken sensor or PowerMac 3,1 not supported?

Edit: did a SMU (?) reset on the motherboard, made no difference except for reseting time/date. Still -0.8 and still fans on full speed.

Powermac G5 2.3ghz DP - 72c constant, not much variation.
Fan design on this model is very well designed, and very quiet.

PMac G4 fans are not SW-controllable (atleast not Quicksilver and older, no clue about MDD/FW800), not sure wether there is a way to get CPU-temp on these either.

    Thank you. I have a Sawtooth M5183.

Yes, I've have noticed that the chassis fan only has two wires and a sensor directly near the center of the fan.

The release notes for 3.0 tells you this: "Delivers support for 4 temperature sensors in a PowerBook and 1 in a PowerMac.". But maybe not exactly my PowerMac model.

I've cleaned some dust and moved the HDD to the left/front instead of sitting directly under the fan/sensor.

The next step is to replace the chassis fan. Edit: replaced. Slightly better, I think.

Next step: change the PSU fan.

    Hello Christoph!
    I started from those links:

    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/G5_CoolantLeak_Repair/G5_CoolantLeak_Repair_p1.html
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3842869?start=0&tstart=0
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1109014
    http://www.saunalahti.fi/~holindho/g5-quad-v1-lcs-repair.html

Though the last link is G5 quad specific, it has interesting tips for refilling and testing the pump.
Let's speak about o-rings, the most important part: the first link report those dimensions:
    - internal diameter: 1.313" --> 3,33502 cm
    - outside diameter: 1.438" --> 3,65252 cm
    - thickness: 1/16" --> 1,5875 mm
The second link specifies different dimension:
    - internal diameter: 3,16 cm
    - thickness: 2,4 mm
I ordered the second one since the fellow wich performed the refurbish on his G5 dual 2.7 wrote those o-rings are a little thicker but are ok. Ordered here:
    http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/
Obviously, those were wrong sizes.... and so I used my dremel gently and with great caution to work the hose part where o-ring would have placed.
So don't make my error: order rhe right one!
    Here:
    http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p513146/1.5mm+Section+33.5mm+Bore+VITON+Rubber+O-Rings+Allow+2-3+Days/product_info.html
    or here:
    http://www.ebay.it/itm/221133721374?var=520114057577&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
IMPORTANT: use the Viton because they have great resistance and durability.
I replaced only the black hose connections and left the metallic tubes since I guess you have a better heat loss with them. But if you want to follow the original project, here you are tube and anti kink coil:
    http://www.ebay.it/itm/321054365551?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
    http://www.ebay.it/itm/271240499066?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Tygon is one of the best cristal clear tube and have a great resistance but you can use a normal tube too.
I ordere the knurled barb to create a filler plug for coolant liquid here:
    http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/p/Enzotech-NPH-ID38-G14-38Inch-10mm-Knurled-Barb--Inc-Blank_4324.html
I used ARCTIC COOLING MX-4 thermal paste wich I bought on ebay and Cooler Master Aquagate NC-1 (described in the first link). This coolant liquid is out of stock but I found here:
    http://www.ebay.it/itm/330529814722?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Obviously, thermal paste and coolant liquid could be different according to your choice and knowledge.
T-bar for connecting tubes (I used a Y bar) is easy to find and so are the clamps and gasket sealant
    Some tips:
Take care of radiator because the old coolant used by delphi leves sediments. I washed (litterally!) the radiator using white winegar and bicarbonate. I left it immerged in winegar for half an hour and then added a spoon of bicarbonate and after the reaction I left there for other ten minutes. Then I repeated process using a tube and funnel to insert bicarbonate and winegar again, just to be sure.
Pay attention to heat transfer modules http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/G5_CoolantLeak_Repair/figure2.jpg
because copper heatsink is really fragile and can easily bend. Handle with care if you have to remove traces and or deposits left by leakage. Use a toothbrush after a winegar/bicarbonate treatment.
I used the gasket sealant even on pump o-ring, just to be sure. A little quantity is enough.
Once created the filler with knurled barb I started to pour the coolant liquid. Here one needs patience: pour a little quantity of coolant, move/rotate all the lcs block so that liiquid reaches all parts of it and repeat until it seems full. Close the filler and go on moving and rotating the block. Sure you will find some parts not filled (transparent tubes help so much here!). Try to move those air bubbles towards the filler and when it's done open and add coolant, close and repeat. Go on til air is gone. Place termal paste on cpu modules and mount them. Take care to mark the processor modules and place them in the original position they were before or calibration will fail!
Don't forget to calibrate the G5 once everything is mounted (I used 2.5.8 ASD dual boot disc) and place the Powermac in a not too hot place or you can occour in an error like this "Move unit to a cooler environment and retest".
    I guess it's all!
    Any question, I'm here.
    Regards!!!

    Hi Jambalah,

buhhh that was already a lot of work to write all this, thanks very much!

As I do have 2 of these 2.7 GHz PM's but do not use them, because to risky that they leak,
I will have a look at all this and buy the stuff in order to service them. Let's see...

    Thanks again for your help.

I replaced my LCS cooling on my 2,7GHz Morphos Machine temporarly to non liquid. Now when about 26-27C on my room the cpu temperature is constantly 84C fans quiet. Even under Blender rendering.

Now the question is, if i recalibrate the temperature with apple service cd this can be better, or calibration has only sense for only OSX?

My dual 2.7 PowerMAc G5 seems to have some problems.
Temperature is now increased til 85.5 C degrees (fluctuating between + 0.2 / 0.4) and doing an examination with 2.5.8 ASD revealed problem on temperature sensor CPUB AD 7417 AD1 with an error message:: "Error thermal reads above alarm settings 2".
I did a thermal calibration and CPU 1 error appeared, checked sensor again and no errors but still 86.5 C degrees and still CPU 1 error on thermal calibration.
I'm going to investigate and maybe trying to disable the CPU 1.

My fan cooled DP 2.7 GHz G5 idles around 80-82 degrees under MorphOS and the fans seem to run more often than under OSX.

They don't run at all for several minutes and then they kick in at full speed like a jet engine for a minute or two then wind down again.

I've not had the time to test it under any kind of heavy load really but I imagine the fans will run at full pelt given enough work to do as just compiling short C programs kicks in the fans immediately. Interestingly, GCC seems to cause the fans to work harder than VBCC does when compiling the same code.

When the kids are back at school after the summer holiday I will try to find time to do some better testing and see what happens.

Can you get a copy of the ASD cd so you can try to run a calibration to see if it successfully calibrates? I only tried one set of 2.7s and it wont calibrate right, but my 2.5ghz air cooled setup passed.

Yeah sure, which version number of ASD is the most recent that supports the 2.7 DP? 2.5.8?

Downloaderising as we speak, but the torrent speed is terrible so it'll probably take a few days to complete at this rate.

Will let you know what happens once I've run the tests on the G5.

Well, I dismounted the cpu unit and replaced cpu 1 (the one below assuming G5 stands vertically) since ASD diagnostic showed an error checking AD 7417 AD1 sensor. Assembled cpu unit, reseated and power on. After the chimes sound G5 booted MorphOS and I immediately noticed the difference: low temperature (started from 66 C degrees to 82) and quiet fans. I booted the ASD cd and checked for thermal calibration wich reporting an error message explaining that wrong values were found and reccomending to perform calibration. Did it and both cpu passed. Reboot and MorphOS runs ok with temperature between 80.9 and 81.1 and fans really quiet. I'm really satisfied! Let's check how it will go next days.

Thanks, the torrent is coming down steadily so i'll just have to be patient. :)

I haven't got the money to register MorphOS for my G5 at the moment after spending a lot of money upgrading and registering my PowerBook so the 30 minute time out pisses me of and causes me to not bother using it at the moment.

Once I've registered it will be anothe story as I'll use it as my main development machine as the PB feels a tad slow when compiling C as I've got used to lighning fast Intel hardware over the years.
