Does this mean that a Pegasos2 G4 can be passivly cooled? Because that's what I
see on the linked page. Do you personnaly have your G4 passivly cooled?

why is it the Pegasos 2 G4 can't be passively cooled where some other system's G4s can? are there different types of G4s?

Of course, there are numerous types of G4 with numerous different max core frequencies and power consumption and heat dissipation figures each.

    Refer to:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC_G4
http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/taxonomy.jsp?code=MPC8XXX7XXX (G4 has 7xxx designation (integrated G4 is 86xx), only currently manufactured ones listed)

Sure, other G4's exist. But the Pegasos-2 G4 only shipped (as far as I know) with the 7447 1GHz, which is a rather hot chip.

I would definately recommend passive cooling. Unless you have a very large and properly secured heatsink. However, that could run into other problems such as causing too much stress on the vertical CPU card.

Best to get a heatsink/fan to replace the stock one that is perhaps a little bit bigger, but still with fan. Copper is a good metal for the base of the heatsink.

zhulien explicitly referred to "other system's G4s" in comparison to "the Pegasos 2 G4", so he clearly didn't mean any Pegasos 2 by "other system's". That's why I answered his 2nd question by giving him links to overviews about the G4 line in general.

Apart from that, there were a few Pegasos 2 delivered with not the 1.0 GHz 7447, but with 1.4 GHz 7447A:

    Ok, I meant active :)

I am not sure those 1.4 cpu cards ever shipped to end users?

Gunnar "BigGun" von Boehn of Greyhound Data is a developer. I don't know about the "Pegasos 2 users" itix wrote about. Taking into account that a Free Developer Workstation is obviously aimed at developers, you are probably right that it didn't ship to end users initially. But developers can very well have sold their machine to end users by now.

I am using an SNE heatsink and fan:
    http://www.sne-web.co.jp/mwf404.htm

Check the MWF404ALCU half way down the page.
It's actually a VGA or Northbridge cooler, fits perfectly
and very quiet. The fan in my case and PSU fan creates more noise
so I don't see any point in passive cooling.
