    Hello,

As I await the AmigaOS / MorphOS Mini chase winner, I have some thoughts over how to use this very chance to Amiga World to get heard widely.

Did MOS dev team disclose any ideas how to market the appearance on the broadly supported hardware, for the very first time?

Was: Mac Mini PPC running MorphOS 2.4
Now: Amiga Forever 2010 with AmiKit and AmigaSYS
Not used: Icaros Desktop 1.2 (reason: no wifi)
    Planned soon: an OS4 system
Shortly then: a MOS notebook (wifi is a must-have)

So? You mean the "I know something I won't tell" attitude is of any virtue here?

No, not at all. What I meant was merely that the MorphOS Team isn't exactly known for disclosing *anything* about *any kind* of future plans, time tables, marketing, etc. The fact that they have publicly announced an intention to release a Mac Mini version *before* they actually release it is kind of astonishing IMHO... ;-)

*Imo* it looks like announcing/demoing anything was a mistake, actually. Ever since that happened the Mac Mini PPC prices went up on allegro.pl (Polish ebay-alike site)...

Power of MorphOS! :) Hmmm... Do you want to say, Mac users informed about MorphOS (and MOS3.0)?

No. What I want to say is that Amiga/MorphOS users are desperately trying to buy them all. Makes it quite hard to secure enough machines for the MorphOS Team members...

All due respect for you as a part o MOST and whole MOST. There was a gossip about MOS for MacMini while ago. No one from MOST tried to deny.

All MacMinis on Ebay or Allegro were gone in couple of weeks. You got one, i've got the same but in States :)

Take a look on amitopiatv.com and PowerDev #7 where you can see Mini running MorphOS. That really works i have to say.

I think that's way users are trying to get any detail about that release. MOST unfortunatelly is doing nothing about their PR or any advertisement at all. That's a pity imho.

By promoting software at a time when you cannot guarantuee a certain date of completion, you just increase public demand for information and expose yourself to repeated requests for explaining why the product is not ready yet, and so on. Since development can be tricky and unpredictable, any early promotion is likely to heat up demand prematurely and cause disappointment and anger.

This is the exact type of can of worms that is best left untouched.

Of course, in the case of the Mac Mini port, I still feel it was a good decision to at least announce it in public as it put the cap back on another sizable can of worms labelled "Where will MorphOS go next? Will the MorphOS development team produce its own butterfly-shaped range of supercomputers?".

Useless points about marketing and promotion I would say. I do not think that MorphOS team cares about promoting anything. MorphOS running on MacMini was shown in public just because the team make it possible for it to run there, so I guess it was shown just to share the happiness of the goal. And I guess that Mac Mini was chosen simply because this was the hardware that was available on developer's home(s).

On the other hand if some people try to make some more cash being aware of the fact that MorphOS will run on Minis ok it is a shame so try to buy your mini from somewhere else. Minis PPC are still very cheap machines that could be tracked down used, so there must be someone who wants to give away his low profile Mini caring not about MorphOS.

You are not serious, are you?

There are still many MacMini computers available all the time every where I look. If you need help finding one, let me know.

    @jacadcaps

Are you being serious? Well I for one doubt that the pre-announcement of MorphOS had any effect whatsoever on the second hand Mac Mini market. The Mac Mini G4's were built in volumes *a lot* higher than a few hundred units after all, it's not like the Pegasos, A1 or Sam. If you experience trouble of getting a hold of a G4 mac on the second hand market, it's more likely because they are already being stuffed away on attics, trashed, etc instead of being put out for sale.

It's still a valid question, and it needs to be answered. The PPC is dead in the sense that there is no interesting future there. Sooner or later MorphOS will have to jump ship (or at least fork) to another architecture. The question is whether it will be ARM or x86 (or both).

Yup, first step - forget about PPC and go x86. Second step - forget about MorphOS and use Windows.

If MorphOS goes x86 then count me out. If it goes ARM... I've not yet decided.

P.S. It's a real shame that every second or third thread ends up with "I think MorphOS should go x86".

AROS is ready and waiting for those who need an x86 OS. ;-)

    Aros isn't what I want.

What is the future for MorphOS?

    MorphOS needs To go x86.

So what other Platform beside x86 is Powerfull enough?
I don't think that ARM has the same power like PPC G4.
And i do not want to use AROS because it lacks to much
    things MOS has.

    Powerful enough for what exactly?

First step would be to choose a *commercial purpose* for the OS. MorphOS doesn't have one right now. The second step would be to choose an architecture based on the answer from the first step. IMHO of course.

Indeed it hasn't, at least not in raw CPU performance. However, some ARM chips has lots of HW accelerators for various CPU intensive tasks that can help offloading the CPU.
