(Self-)Bounty proposal: updated TurboPrint

Finally the bounty system has been revived! So I guess it's finally time to "formalize" my old bounty proposal:
    Self-Bounty proposal for updating TurboPrint.

    Background:
We know TurboPrint is licenced and included in MorphOS. However, the version bundled is pretty old and consequently supported printers are often way too old. Modern printers that you can buy today are usually incompatible.
A stopgap was once described by DoctorMorbius_FP here, but even TP 7.60 is now 5 years old...
In the meantime IrseeSoft/ZEDOnet focussed development on Linux and MacOSX. Development still proceeds at a good pace, and a lot of drivers are released (compatibility list here, feature list here).

    Proposal:
IrseeSoft/ZEDOnet shall be contacted to propose them to set a pricetag to update MorphOS' TurboPrint to be compatible with the drivers of the latest Linux version, in a way that the drivers would just need recompilation, and "printers/" (i.e. #?.tpp) files would just be compatible.

Some preliminary discussion already took place here:
    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=4859&%20forum=9#47106%20
Christoph "rms" wrote that he was able to get a "converted" driver from Mr. Zeiler, who would be the "target" of this bounty, a couple of years ago, which in some ways indicates that he might not be against the proposal of doing some work if paid.
CISC seemed pretty supportive of the idea, at least when it comes to determine the bounty guidelines (page 2).

    Proposed bounty guidelines:
The bounty is (even better, would be) for TurboPrint. We want a better, more compatible with newer printers, easier to mantain with as little efforts as possible from IrseeSoft side version of TurboPrint to be included with MorphOS for the time being. Easier to mantain refers to the fact that the internals shall be made compatible with the Linux version of TP, ths requiring minimal work to update the MorphOS version as well.

The bounty results shall be included by default in the next MorphOS ISOs/distributions, but might be separately downloadable at http://support.morphos-team.net/ , so that even those that have not upgraded to MorphOS 2.x can benefit (and support the bounty).

The bounty sum to be reached shall be decided by IrseeSoft/ZEDOnet, if they decide to accept the bounty. They should indicate a minimal sum that would make them develop a version complying with the simple terms above (on par with current Linux version and with the same drivers). Optionally they can indicate a quarterly fee, or something like that, that would motivate them to keep the MorphOS version updated.

Development shall start only after the proposed sum has been reached with donations here at the revived MorphZone bounties.

    Discussion:
Of course there is not a single thing set on stone: feel free to contriute to the bounty terms definition, or to general discussion (wheter you find this bounty completely useless and why, for instance).
Hopefully this time we can have some more feedback from users...
    So, discuss!

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

Add this 2 things (very easy to solve IMHO) to the required bounty changes in case it will ever happen:

o Turboprint: assign is superfluous on MorphOS and its usage must be removed (simply exchange to the MOSSYS:TP/ path instead)

o settings must not be stored inside MOSSYS:

o Fix TurboPrint to not require ColorMap when printing in RGB24 mode (minor bug but annoying)
    1 + 1 = 3 with very large values of 1

We allready have a opened Bounty at Pegasosforum for creating a new,
or porting an existing Printing-System (like CUPS) to MorphhOS.
Please have a look on "Open Bounty [0007]" at http://www.pegasosforum.de/bounty.php
I think it would not be very usefull, to open a secend bounty with the
    same prupose.
Maybe we can discuss if the "Turboprint extension" should be included
as an alternative goal, if the Morphzone- and Pegasosforum Bounties
will be linked together in the future.
My personal toughts are, thah a open-sourcce port of an printing
system should be prefered, because if Irsee-Soft would
do this "genrel upadte", we would have to pay for every future update.

    That would be great !
I'm sure that the spreadsheet-bounty will get much more donations, as
    soon as it is assigned...
If you don't want to start from the scratch, maybe ignition could be
extended to fullfill the bounty feature-requests.
    http://ignition.berlios.de/

The SVG bounty isn't opened for now, because it was not on the "Top 5 wishlist",
so you should not expect many donators. But if you want, you
can start it as self bounty.

If you want to get in contact with the PF Bounty-Team, please write
    a Mail to: bounty-team@amigaclubhamburg.de

Actually, it wouldn't be the same purpose. It seems to me the targets are very different. The Pegasosforum.de bounty is for any printing system, with very general specifications and requirements. I am trying to push for an update to TurboPrint, which is not really a port of an alien system, but the upgrade of the MorphOS printing system, already integrated in the OS and its preference system.
I do think that TurboPrint and CUPS are very different things. I do prefer TurboPrint by a long shot, for the easy usage and configuration, for overall results and for being consistent (both in terms of GUI and of general organization) with the system and well integrated.
So I think the targets are very different: one is a pure bounty anyone can take. What I am proposing is something only IrseeSoft/ZEDOnet can eventually take.
Moreover I do prefer the MorphZone bounties in general, as they are more accessible and available on a more widespread site. This doesn't mean I am going to belittle your effort: it is great that a regional user group can come up with something similar, and the german community really seems the biggest one as far as MorphOS is concerned, so keep up the good work!

As I see it, the goals are not mutually exclusive, but for sure alternative... Therefore I don't think it makes sense to unite the two bounties.

As you can see, I think quite the opposite: I am not really interested in donating for a port of an alien open source system (that I would however welcome if it came as "free software" and not only open source software). I am ready to pay for an update (and possibly even an upgrade path) of a satisfying commercial program that was once one of the gems of the Amiga-systems, and could be a strong point of MorphOS for the time being.
So I still think this bounty makes perfect sense.

Not yet, but it shouldn't be difficult, considering they are still alive as a software house. I think it would have been serious to have some feedback from the community, to see if people are interested. I cannot make it alone (i.e. I don't think I can donate up to the fullfilment of the bounty alone), and I wanted to see if there are more potential donors.
Right now the community response has not been overwhelming, but I am willing to wait some more. ;-)

    @tokai, itix and jPV:
Thanks! These suggestions make sense, and will be added to the requirements, if the bounty ever starts.

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

I do prefer Turboprint too, but i think is not likely that we can collect
enough money to get Irsee-Soft making the update.
A User of the PF was in contat with them and they told him that they
would think about it, if about 1000 updates could be sold...
If the update would only cost 10 EUR, we had to collect 10.000 EUR.
But maybe they change their mind - and make an update for less money -
    who knows !?

About the MZ and PF Bounties:
I do understand that you - and many other prefer the MorphZone bounties.
The Pegasosforum bounties were not founded because of fun or in competition
to the MZ bounties. They were founded, because the MZ Bounties were "frozen"
(not to say dead) for a long time...
But hey - thats all history ;-)
Now we should take the best from both and make one even better Bounty-Project -
and as i know, the work is in progress...

It is a good thing to keep in mind that any of these bounties from any site all actually help the developer. I don't think any developer is dissallowed from collecting more than one bounty.

Speaking of a work in progress, I'm posting this message from AWeb ;-)

What do you want to hear?
Yes, I'm ready to make donations, but I can not pay 10 000 EUR...

How many MorphOS users we have? 1 000? 2 000?.. Do you really think, we can collect this sum?

I would be very much interested, because we would a modern printing soltuion for MorphOS so we can use the latest modern printers on the market.

Now 10'000 Euros is a lot of money... but I would support this with a few hundred Euros.

Apparently, no amount of money could get making them the update by now:
