But it's like read-only, very small files can be written to the disk, but "larger" files (>1kB) can't be written - it's weird, maybe Samba config needs to be improved, but I tried everything (smb.conf).

It may be a problem with netstack.
I have the same and also with NFSD, which has no problem in RW mode on amitcp for example.

Well NFSD works better anyway then SMB :)

    Hi all,

I'm a bit surprised by all these problems with Samba running on MorphOS 2, having low speed, not being able to
write large files (I often need to copy or save image files with >80 MB)...

I posted an answer to max who wrote to the morphos mailing liste, that I also find it difficult to setup and use Samba
and I've got the following answer back:

IMHO it is not. It's actually dead easy;)

Only if you want your shares on the MorphOS side. But even
Samba is easy to install (if you use the right package and
    read the manual properly).

If you just want to connect your MorphOS box to some Windows
or OSX Samba shares you only need 'smbfs' on MorphOS. It's
    very easy to use too.

I used SharePoints on OSX to configure a few Samba shares and
then just connected with smbfs from MorphOS to it. I attached
a script which I use from WBStartup directory for this
(just add an icon, set it to project mode and use IconX as
default tool... and of course modify it to match your
configuration... install 'smbfs' executable to SYS:C/ ).

It's all dead easy. Seriously. If I had a little sister,
even she could do that. ;)

    regards,

So, is it so easy to install and is it working without problems, because here are several
people working 8 hours per day which does not permit me to not being able to share HD's
    and Networkprinters in a LAN.

    Many thanks for your feedback.

I just downloaded SMBFS from Aminet and it took me less than 5 minutes to get it working on MorphOS 2.1, Efika and my WinXP PC connected to one router.

I shared a folder on the PC side and mounted SMBFS with a single CLI line and it works perfectly.

For me, that's enough, I don't need a full Samba install - I just want to see one shared folder on my Ambient desktop - and it works just like that. The only problem I have is that doesn't run when started from S:User-Startup, but when launched from CLI after Ambient is loaded (with the same command) - it's all OK. I'm guessing it takes some time for TCP/IP stack to start and SMBFS starts too early to detect it correctly (althought it's the last line in my User-Startup).

    Link to smbfs: http://aminet.net/comm/tcp/smbfs.lha

PS. Just one more thing: does anyone know how to configure SMBFS to use multiple shared folders (on WinXP side)? I mean, my machine, network name "WINXP" for example has two shared folders: one "Music" and one "Download". As far as I know, i need to provide specific shared folder when starting smbfs, in this case it would be something like that:

    Code:

    run >NIL: smbfs workgroup=MSHOME user=PCGuest service=//WINXP/Music Volume=Music

    or

    run >NIL: smbfs workgroup=MSHOME user=PCGuest service=//WINXP/Download Volume=Download

That works fine, but I have to start a separate smbfs for each shared folder on PC side.

I cannot start smbfs just by using service=//WINXP -
I also tried using //WINXP/all as an argument, but it didn't work ("Cannot connect to server (5, Input/output error)")...

    Can anyone help?

    @skipp604,

are you having the same problems as the others with
slow speeds and being unable to copy across large
    files?

One of my friends who went with me to the AmiWest show
where I displayed my EFIKA and MorphOS2.1 to all at
the show has actually used my EFIKA more than I have
and I gave him the task of downloading and installing
a bunch of applications and games to show people at
the show how well the EFIKA and MOS2.1 work. He
installed AmiTradeCenter, or something like that and
was able to setup my MacBook as an FTP server and send
some large movie files from the MacBook to my EFIKA
at decent a speed. Not fast, but acceptable for the
    circumstances.

I had MPlayer running some movie files, but my EFIKA
could not keep up and the sound was ahead of the
movie playback, so I shut down the movies on the EFIKA
not wanting to make it look bad in front of the OS4
    crowd.

I'm not having any problems with SMBFS except for the one I mentioned in my previous post. The speed is nearly 5MB/sec to RAM and around 3MB/sec to HD (that's what Ambient shows when copying a large file) - so it's still lot faster than using USB stick ;). I never experienced any corrupted or broken files (large or small, doesn't matter).

But, someone posted that these problem occurred only when Samba was installed (I am using only SMBFS). And as I understood correctly, the problem was with very small, not large files.

Also, I used the newest GMPlayer (thanks Fab!!!) to open video files straight from the LAN - my XP machine that is - and all plays smoothly, no A/V sync problems at all. I will even risk the statement, that network on Efika is faster than IDE interface ;)

To sum up - for me, SMBFS works really great, I just can't start it with service=//WinXPMachine/all as it returns error mentioned earlier. Mounting separate share folder works just fine.

I am using version 1.66 (10.6.2004) - the one from Aminet.

    Hello all Samba users :)

I have a new build of Samba 3.2.0. It works well , except that it impossible
to browse the shares from Windows(browsing works from osx and linux). However mounting them dirctly works fine.

The only problem I have is related to my Efika , I have very slow network
performance when getting data from the efika to something else. This can result
in timeout problems on the pc side.

I have only tested it on Efika MorphOS 2.x , and I am interested to hear how
    it works on Pegasos.

If you want to test this , please PM me.

    @ micken

I would be glad to test it as I need a solution to setup a LAN with 6 Pegasos and if possible
a windows box, but I don't have enough experience with Samba.

I never even used it up to now (I use Envoy 3.1 only for a LAN with Pegasos and MorphOS) because I found Samba
to difficult and complicated to setup...

First, i doubt you ever tested it on MorphOS 1.5. :)
Then, smbfs works just as fine as it's supposed to work on MorphOS2.x. So, what doesn't work exactly? If it's a crash issue, you should add some stack. SMBFS requires a bit more than the default stack.

fab, you're magic and i'm a fat lamer! :) I doubled the stack and...dada! it works perfectly. thank you very much.

the same smaller stack worked fine in 1.4.x, so i didn't think to change it - doh.

    thank you again :)

I'm trying to get samba working on my Pegasos 2 G4 so it can share its files with my other Pegs.
I've installed samba 2.2.5 68k version and added the following following lines to envarc:sys/net/inetd.conf:

netbios-ssn stream tcp nowait root samba:bin/smbd smbd
netbios-ns dgram udp wait root samba:bin/nmbd nmbd
swat stream tcp nowait root samba:bin/swat swat -a

    I've added:
    netbios-ns 137/udp
    netbios-dgm 138/udp
    netbios-ssn 139/tcp
    swat 901/tcp

to the bottom of the envarc:sys/net/services file.

And my envarc:sys/net/passwd file looks like the following:
    pcguest||1|100|PC Guest|SYS:|cli

I've set a static ip of 192.168.1.247 and edited the smb.conf file according to my network.
If I use smbclient on my other Peg2G4 it lists the shares available so all well and good so far.
But I can not get smbfs to mount these shares. I keep getting ERRSRV - ERbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid) and then error 21.

As far as I know I haven't set a password so I'm at a bit of a loss. I've spent hours trying different things but to no avail. I've managed to get samba working on my Amiga 1200 and on AOS4.1 so I have got some experience with it but I just don't know what else to try. Do I need to change the inet.access file or something?

Thanks in advance to anybody who can provide any guidance.
