Oh no! The serial port is the easiest way for debugging. Would be very hard for developers without it.

    1) answered a million times

2 ) yeah, and is there an EfikaPhone and EfikaPod planned ? what about the EfikaTV and EfikaBookPro ?

    3) we already know the answer, check the videos of morphos on efika.

    4) Voodoo is dead, ATI doesn't provide open source drivers for PPC, you have the answer.

    5) see above, the serial port is essential.

    6) onboard gfx as planned

    7) we talked about that oin IRC some time ago right ?

I still don't understand why you want to turn the Efika into a full destop system and keep asking questions in this direction.

There is no problem in having the Efika as a desktopsystem.
Everything depends on what you are doing with your computer.
For surfing the web, playing some goodies in dosbox or listen to some mp3 music the efika is very suitable.

But for the price of 99$ its a very cheap computer.

You can read the log here :

    Log_IRC-BBRV-20070724.txt

There is nothing interesting to learn... perhaps the fact that the efika is now produced in China and the peg 3 is idle.

I like the "none-answer" of BBRV, especially about the firmware and the bPlan/Genesi filiation ;-)

Better said, a cheap board. Turning it into a real computer rises it's cost.

If I can run MOS 2.0 on my Peg 2, I don?t need Efika at all despite of it's nice design and small form factor.
Peg has far superior performance and it's designed as a real desktop system.
It has a small amount of RAM, 256 would have been more useful.

I would consider purchasing one of them as replacement if my Peg burns out or dies as there's no replacement for it :(

Yes, it seemed BBRV were too busy or something and didn't bother to give proper answers, just to get over with it as quickly as possible. IMO it would have been better to reschedule if they indeed were so busy.

Well, difficult if several questions would have had to be asked to the MorphOS-Team instead. :-)

    indeed
i prefer to think that way instead of thinking they were actually avoiding the proper answers. (eg the question about the relationship between bplan and genesi).

As phx said, a serial port is fairly important.

Remember the EFIKA isn't necessarily going to have a graphical head. Actually, I thought it would make a good high end ADSL router, using a PCI riser and an ADSL card. In this case, a serial port is vital for configuring the firmware.

USB is horribly complicated to configure before you get to attachment - and remember, USB hosts don't connect to USB hosts. You have to initialise the port, enumerate connected devices (and cope with hubs), and then you'll need drivers for the cable to connect to another host. All of these things are way overboard if you want to spew out a few "hey, I'm alive" messages to a debug console.

Many devices that don't have a physical serial port often have headers (even if they aren't connected to anything) on the board for either RS232 or TTL serial. In more recent years, USB host controllers have a "debug port" mode that acts like a dumb serial port, removing the need for the legacy serial port. Its public usage isn't very common, though. LinuxBIOS has been using it for modern chipsets.

The serial port has lots of valuable life left in it :-)
