Several months ago there were big news about PPaint being ported to MorphOS.

Now my question is if there is any progress with the port and maybe even an estimated release date.

Any info regarding the port is greatly appreciated.

Someone agreed to work on it some days ago, but he's still very busy with other projects until the end of the year - but after that, he's willing to take on the project.

hugh... The port has been announced months ago (maybe a year), and some *days* ago someone *aggreed* (!) to work on it ?

    Isn't there something wrong ?

I asked about it to Cloanto directly several months ago and was told it was in the hands of the porter...

    @Leo

Well, I guess if the porter would get paid for his work, it might have been / could be done faster - don't know.

Of course in case the porter would see sense in creating a bounty for this, I'd happily donate as well, since I'm really looking forward to the MorphOS version of PPaint.

Could it be that you mixed PerfectPaint, which is written in BlitzBasic and where the Source was given away latley, with Cloantos PersonalPaint?
Just a guess, but the only news about something with a second P in Paint, was that on amiga-news about Perfect Paint :)

No, I do mean Cloanto's PPaint. - Since I had been curious about the port myself a few weeks ago, I approached bbrv about it and then asked someone if he wouldn't knew someone who would be skilled enough and willing to do the port.

So: correct me if I'm wrong...

A year and 11 months ago, it was announced that PPaint would be ported to MorphOS but back then Genesi had no intention, and/or not the money to pay someone to do it ?

    Now that's great...

Theres nothing about an OS4 version either.. personally I think it was just bullshit-speak and high hopes with no real basis.

By open sourcing it we'd have PPaint10 by now :)

I don't care about the OS4 version: it could have been released a year ago, or it could be released in 2010, that wouldn't change anything.

What game are they playing by announcing something they know that cannot happen ?

AFAIK some parts of PPaint are written in assembly...

Hmm, I wonder how much of a problem could that be?

IMHO 68k binaries as such are OK, as long as the program works with MorphOS. Of course, doing changes to assembly might not be as fast and easy as in C ...

It's finally there, about a decade late:

"After several attempts by different teams over the years, Andy Broad was able to successfully bring back to life and update the original 7.1 code branch in 2014. The priority of the 7.2 release [...] was to validate stability and compatibility following the build platform change [...]. New features of Personal Paint 7.2 include: Source code updated to create dual native 68K and PowerPC (AmigaOS 4) builds [...]"
    http://www.amigaforever.com/classic/ppaint/

Click the link for a list of further enhancements. The m68k build of 7.2 should work fine on MorphOS, I think.

Yes, but for those of us who have the Amiga Forever 2013 package, who were updated to the AF2014 version as a free update, the PPaint v7.2+ is not part of that update it seems, unless someone else has found the latest version in their AF2014 automatic update.

I did send a message to Amiga Forever / Cloanto, but I have not had a reply back from Michael Battilana, from when the 2014 update was released, so it seems PPaint v7.2+ is not going to be part of the 'free' update. :-(

"If we can get enough confirmed users willing to buy it on AROS, I don't see why not? Probably around 180 users willing to buy would be enough break even (rough estimate) and cover a few hundred hours development time."

    http://amigaworld.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=7260&start=100#93765

Even half of that would be very good number. It is not really new software, many have bought older version already and PPC native recompile is not really an improvement to justify rebuying.

That is, I dont see any reason to support MorphOS native version at this time. Not from MorphOS user or A-eon POV. But that is just my opinion.

Edit: apparently there is some confusion over there. 180 sold copies is apparently meant for developing new version with new features.

180 sold copies doesn't seem impossible. That is maybe one in every 5 active user or more (my personal estimate). It all depends on price, festures and timespan of course.
