Trying to run Maelstrom and I get a message stating I need a monitor that can display 256 colors. I'm running a Quadra 1mb rom, OS 8.1.

Also, networking.. anyone got it working, if so, how?

If for some reason something goes wrong and I close the window running Basilisk, I have had to restore from backup the 8.1 hardfile. Is that normal?

Basilisk II will not close properly if you just close the window unless you shutdown using the Special Menu in the OS (Finder) otherwise you risk corrupting data.

As for 256 colors check the Monitors panel from the the Apple menu in the Control Panels section.

Networking (I have not tested this so don't know if it works)

Boot your emulated Macintosh. Open the System Folder and the Control Panels folder. Double click on the “TCP/IP” control Panel. If you get a prompt about TCP/IP being inactive, click “yes.”

Follow these steps to set up your Internet access:
One: Select “connect via Ethernet” (this should be the default setting)
    Two: Select “connect manually”
Three: In “IP address” enter 192.168.0.4
Four: In “Subnet Mask” enter 255.255.255.0
Five: In “Router Address” enter 192.168.0.1
Six: In “Name Server Addr” enter your DNS address
Seven: Quit the control panel. Hit “save” when prompted.“

you have to set it 256 color not millions or it will not work...

Alternatively if there is a pull strip in the bottom left you can click the colour screen icon and set it to 256 color that way.

It needs an 8 bit color palette not a 16/24 one.

as for the networking I was not sure that was just stolen from a guide for the Windows 32 JIT so not surprised if it didn't work...

    heres the guide

When you get that? This sounds like a bug in Basilisk.

Ok..got farther..or at least I know what to use in Basilisk II GUI..

    sungem_eth.device.

No networking on the Mac side yet..still tryin to figure it out.

    Update:

Under Linux, booting from the ISO of 8.1 just works. MorphOS, didnt. So I created a new Mac OS 8.1 hardfile and installed 8.1 fresh, copied over to MorphOS, disabled the Rose extension and booted up.
    I installed OpenTransport 1.1.2, configured IP's manually..no ethernet yet.

    WOOO HOOO!!!!

    NOW IT WORKS!

    EDIT:

Annndd...it crashed while accessing Apple's website (default page for IE)... had to kill Basilisk II..lost my hardfile. This is just too unreliable/unstable.

Yeah, old MacOS is like Amiga when it crashes. It can crash in a moment and badly. Usual state for old Macs in our university was frozen state.

I found the Old Macs very stable. I still use a Powerbook 1400 occasionally and it proves to be quite a robust machine. However it is true when Mac OS 8 or lower crashes it does seem to take the whole system with it.

Admittedly Basilisk II is rather fragile and seems to lock up frequently. Which is why I stopped using it. I intended it as a Hypercard development platform but it was too unstable.

Is there a Mac 68k emulator that is more stable that runs under MorphOS?

Dont know if the MESS emulator is any more stable....never tried it.

Sheepshaver is not available for MorphOS as far as I am aware. But I could be wrong.

Picking up early PowerPC or low end macs are pretty cheap if you search about.

Also with the likes of Macintosh Garden, you can get quite a lot of old software to play with.

Its Basilisk II. I see those errors I posted earlier when I click start.

    @zerohour

Yea, Im looking for an actual Apple computer but I was hoping to do stuff under MorphOS using an emulator like when I used Shapeshifter on Amiga (very stable).

If I can get rid of "AN_BadFreeAddr" errors it could get better. There are also several other factors, like Basilisk II using old UAE core (for CPU emulation). I maybe look at it if I can get it running after these years...

Where can I find a guide exclusively made to install and configure in Morphos 3.9? All I've found is instructions to install in Linux, AmigaOS or BeOS.
MacMini G4 1.5GHz with MorphOS 3.9 FPGA MiST w/AmigaOS 3.9 (PFS3), FPGA Replay w/AmigaOS3.9, Amiga 1200 SCSI CD-RW, X-SURF 100 w/Rapidroad USB, External FDD with Chinon and Gotek units and Acer Aspire One ICAROS

Install Basilisk II ? If so, its not worth it. it'll crash rendering your hardfile useless.

I'm still playing around with this.

How can I mount a cdrom on the Mac side? I tried "2nd.ide.device", but that didnt work.

open the CONTROL UNIT and see what DEVICE and UNIT supports CD-ROM

    e.g
    iBook uses idemacio.device unit 0

I was looking in the wrong spot.. Filled out the "SCSI" portion and not the main tab. CDROM drive accessible.

Oddly enough, there is a Mac CD that isnt readable, shows no files on the Mac side or the MorphOS side. Strange.

Ok, for my situation I found out how to fix a bad hardfile, YMMV.

I have a backup copy of my hardfile, a plain jane Mac OS 8.1 hdf. I boot from it (also mounting the "bad hardfile"), then from the good hardfile I copy Apple Extras --> MAC OS Info Center subfolder to the same location in the "bad hardfile". Fixed my problem.

After another crash, I decided to copy anything from Apple Extras and that fixed my hardfile. So I dont think
its related to what I copied. I think I can copy anything to it and that will fix it after a crash.

    EDIT: 03/17/2018:
Yea...boot off of a working hardfile, make sure you mount the "bad" hardfile. Then copy anything..a text file...to the bad hardfile. shutdown..remove the "good" hardfile, leaving the one that you had that wouldnt boot. Now it should work fine.
