    Hi everybody,

I started a new website for MorphOS related downloads, currently hosting over 1400 files and expanding each day.

    - Clean design, no advertising.
    - No registration is required.
    - Fast and stable hosting.
    - Tight infrastructure, eg. Backup each night.

    http://www.MorphOSCentral.com

    Enjoy,

    Bastiaan

Not bad, but it would be easier if you catagorized or alphabetized the files or if you offered a search function.

Some notes and tips from me:

+ Is generaly a bad idea to host old driver like the Poseidon 2.2MOS.
Poseidon is a pice of MorphOS now and old updates like 2.2 are not so good.

+ Please sort the contents. I personaly did't search in a looooong list of software.
+ Please did't host any software without my known. Calimero is beta and need
more work. I select the host my self.
+ Do you update the software entry if a newer version is getable?

There are some great potential here :-) But you need an organizing tree and several ways to list files (date, size, type, popularity, user grades etc).

I kind of don't see what will make this better than MorphOS Files, except if you includes m68 programs too that works well under MorphOS. Then this site will make perfect sense, at least for me ;-)

Thanks for all the input, of course the site still needs a lot of tweaking. I'm working on:

    - * Generally more functionality
    - Categories
    - Different sorting of search results.
    - A real time filter, to live narrow search results.
    - File submission system
    - Disclaimers
    - Things like: notify admin button for each file.
    - Screenshots of applications (yes this is a lot of work).
    - Let users place comments under files.

Some of these functionality will become available this evening.

It's not my intention to compete with aminet or morphosfiles, it is just my way of contributing to the MorphOS scene with some spare bandwidth and diskspace i had left on our business server platforms.

@pegasos-sigi2: i sent you a PM thru this website, so we can have a look at the files you want to be removed. from our hosting.

@Yasu: i have no problem with hosting m68 programs that runs well under MorphOS, if the licence allows it.

That's not how you do this - you check the license first, then add it to your archive if the license permits that. But that is impossible if you simply copy entire existing archives using a script, of course.

Drawerball.lha on your front page is marked "Distribution: Aminet" on Aminet, which means you can't host it either - not that I care, I'm just pointing out the author might.

I have to say reusing Aminet readmes but cutting off the complete header (i.e. Author and uploader information, plus the occasional copright notice), strikes me as a strange approach anyway, one that some authors might not approve of.

I don't see why you'd have to host the very same files *one more time* anyway, i.e. in addition to the seven or eight Aminet mirrors plus Morphos-Files. I don't know about the latter, but Aminet allowes linking to binaries.

In my opinion linking files directly from Aminet would be better idea. If deemed necessary MorphOS Central could have its own upload area but duplicating Aminet files is just waste of good harddisk space. This also solves redistribution problem as you pointed out.

Same for MorphOS files if it allows linking to binaries.

Bonus for uploading to MorphOS Central exclusively could be screenshots, rating and such, if/when implemented.

Ok guys you definitely have a point here. I immediately made a few small changes. The download button now refers to the original download location, and at the top header of our file details page there is note explaining that the file is hosted remotely. This is only a quick n dirty small fix for the legal part, i will be putting more effort in this part...

My focus now lies at the categories, sorting, filtering, rating and commenting system :) Just trying to make a fun and refreshing system around existing resources. In the near future there will be a upload system, so people can use our hosting if they wish.

The system must be something fun, an addition.. not something useless. Again i'm very thankful for your input. If you have more good idea's let me know.

Starting a PHP Fusion website and automatically importing Aminet MorphOS contents was the easy part. Categorizing and quality control is where the real work starts. I'm importing slowly Aminet MorphOS archives to MorphOS Files too, (still some 800 to do).

But I do it manually, checking redistribution permissions and checking software quality. From my experience at least 40% of these – mostly old – archives are of low quality (do not work at all, crash at start etc.), 20% more is debatable (for example duplicates of applications delivered with the system, has been obsoleted etc.).
