Hi Guys,

I am trying to install PegXLin (or any Linux/UNIX/whatever) on my Peg, and am having no end of problems.

First I try to boot of CD, it's having none of it, so I try to boot the kernel of my MorphOS drive, it boots.

Follow the instructions, and eventually get it to install.

Crashes on startup, find out the kernel on my MorphOS partition is corrupted (TIP: don't copy using Ambient, use the shell and it's OK).

It gets a bit further now, but won't mount the root drive, it thinks it corrupted.

I try to format the drive from scratch, the Debian installer won't recognize that I even have a Hard Drive, even though it just booted from it. This problem seems related to amiga-fdisk.

I have also tried Gentoo, and pretty much everything else and have one problem after another.

I think my hardware might be screwed up, as MorphOS is very, very unreliable, this might be normal, I don't know.

Is there a good HOWTO on installing a linux (or BSD) on the peg?

Is it just me having all these problems, or are other people? If so, how did you solve them?

I don't mind wiping my HD, I just want a working OS on it!

What is your configuration? Have you tried the beta2linux mailing list?

If you do a fresh install of MorphOS 1.4 and are
having problems something must be wrong as it
should run quite stable. Are you using an older Peg
without April fixes? (could be an issue)

For PegXLin I suggest copying the "install" and
"pegxlin" images to your "boot image" partition
first. Setup the "Linux" and "Swap" partitions
using MorphOS with correct maxtransfer and
filesystem ids.

Then Format the drives from the Debian
"install" image. After executing "hdinstall" from
the debian command line it should be ok when
finished...

Also be sure to pass the root=/dev/hdxx
when starting PegXLin or it will not mount
the partition.

I tried many Linux verions on Pegasos and overall Linux is crap and useless. Now I can understand why Linux isnt a success on the desktop market. I hope OpenBeOS for Pegasos will come out shortless.

Thanks very much for the replies, I don't think I have the April fixes, the MorphOS unreliabilty is mostly with Ambient, the apps seem OK.

I was setting up the Linux and swap partitions with the debian stuff, not MorphOS, maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. Are instructions available on how to do it in MorphOS?

The readme on the pegxlin cd has instructions for setting up from MorphOS.

That's your opinion. And I would add such as imho.
Millions are satisfied ppl imho , tho I have to admit that there is room for improvement in Linux. I installed Linux3 years ago and rebooted only a couple of times. So if that's crap. Maybe you need a closer look into Linux and maybe it could be your own mind that's a little narrow.
Anyway good luck with your rebooting sequences and may you see the light in the future.

(Maybe you confuse things with THE crap.)

I hate linux when it does things I don't want it to do... Or doesn't do things that I want it to do. When it runs fine, I like it fine.

However, I agree that linux can be very top-heavy and as bloated (in some cases moreso) as windows. With that said, it can also be very light too. I suppose it has to do with the *purpose* of a particular linux installation. Linux is insanely configurable, and that configurability is where it bites most users (myself included) in the arse.

It seems that genesis havent burned the image correctly, i'll contact them about it!.

I've experienced this same problem (via corrupt bug)

Sounds like you have an early pegasos board (no april chip)

I had no problem with seeing the cdrom from the pegasos. Make sure you open your cdburning software first, then load the iso--don't burn a cd with the file.iso on the disk. treat it like you would an old DMS disk...

I installed Pegxlin yesterday, it took some time to figure
things out. The resulting cd after burning the pegxlin.iso
had the filenames with a . in the end, every file, so i
edited the hdinstall script and changed the filename
in there to "pegxlin." Then after running the hdinstall
it installed, but i got a few lines(10-15) of read errors
from cp (copy command?)
But linux on pegasos is _very_ slow, its so slow that its
tempting just to forget about linux on pegasos or a 600mhz
G3.
I cant play any movies with Pegxlin either, xine crashes every time, after fiddling a few hours installing Mplayer, i can see the movie but no sound, if i setup mplayer to use alsa sound, the
sound plays well but picture updates every 10 secs, so its useless.
It might be just me and my linux setup, but its so slow its
boring to use, to start a webbrowser takes ages, moving windows makes whole movement to 'stall' waiting to update
graphics behind the window.
I have 256mb of ram, it was recommended to have 128mb for
poweruse, still after a fresh pegxlin boot i have 16mb ram free, but after a visit to control centre and disabling effects and fancy stuff i got 74mb free

Maybe theres something that can be adjusted to speed up the system but i'm not that familiar with linux administration
and fine tuning of services, but linux on pegasos was abit of
a disapointment, it takes ages to load and slow and sluggish to use.

catohagen: Many linux boots don't by default enable Level2 cache on
CPU . that could explain part of slowdown (a big part actually)..

Im booting with
boot pegxlin root=/dev/hdc1 video=radeon l2cr=0x800000000 ide0=ata66 ide1=ata66
as the pegxlin docs says.Should anything be different ?

after googling abit i found a command for checking l2 cache

debian:~$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/l2cr
0x00000000: disabled, no parity, 2MB, clock disabled, flow-through burst SRAM, copy-back, 0.5ns hold


this means l2cache is disabled ? how to find the correct
value for pegasos cpu ?
