hi guys its running here but i cant get any backgrounds or what so

Use "Scalos Pattern" to define you window backgounds.
Put your favorite images in the pattern list, assign an ordinal number to each one, and select default patterns for the different window types on the "defaults" page.

You can even have more than one image with the same number, meaning that everytime a window is opened with that pattern number, a random image is selected.

Individual patterns/images for different windows are possible, too. Use the "SCALOS_PATTERNO=xxx" tooltype to assign a distinct pattern to a drawer.

How create any filetypes? For example for .mp3 files?
Currently filetypes plugin is very different from 68k version.

    It is really, really good.
This can be a real good desktop solution.
Of course there are bugs and package issue to be handled, documentation to be written, themes to be designed - but it is already very usable.

Ambient is getting better and better, but Scalos is still ahead - and there is definitly a place for both.

    Thanks!

    Forget FileTypes plugin!!
It is obsolete and no longer required. DefIcons functionality is integrated into Scalos.

The point is to get hold of a working DefIconsPrefs. I took the DefIcons44 archive from Aminet, and patched it use version 41 instead of 45 for several OpenLibrary calls.
There should be an older version of DefIcons around somewhere, but I'm not sure about that :-?

Sure but it needs a good default theme and prefs.

On my sys (Peg2+Mos 1.4.4) Scalos hangs many times during boot or opening a window.
Despite all I've been randomly able to use it and it's really a nice desktop!!!
Needs some more tuning but it's a very nice work Scalos Team, all my respect for this nice ambient replacement...

Hi, I installed the Scalos beta and it's working
quite well here. I did notice a few problems
though. Here is a small list:

    1. Missing mcpframe.mcc, pophotkey.mcc
    and urltext.mcc which prevents the
prefs from opening etc. At least
providing some links on the scalos
site to download locations would be
    nice.

    2. Most of the prefs are preset to
    nonexistent files. For instance
the patterns in the pattern prefs
all seemed to be configured to
    someones personal system instead
    of being blank. Several default
menu options do not work. etc.
    (perhaps I selected wrong settings
    during install?)

    3. I did encounter some window freeze-ups
but using the ramdebug boot option
    seemed to fix/bypass the problem.

On the positive side I am enjoying Scalos
so far and it seems reasonably stable once
    everything is in place.

Great work so far. Thanks. :)

Looks like at least some of the observed hangs and crashes are due to some GIF images in the THEME: drawer.

If you have the tools to do so, at least replace the images in THEME/window/statusbar by PNG versions.
ScalosSplashLogo and ScalosAboutLogo cause problems, too. Unfortunately, there is a bug in 40.32 that incorrectly displays PNG images with transparent background.

I'm currently investigating the startup crashes, but have no conclusive results yet.
However, it seems like inserting a "wait" just before "LoadWB" in the startup-sequence solves the problem.

We are currently preparing improved installation and default preferences for Scalos, and hope to able to release an update in the near future.

mcpframe.mcc will be included in the next version since it's hardly available anywhere.
urltext.mcc can be found on Aminet.
I still have to check for pophotkey.mcc.

Maybe we can add those packages to the Scalos web site.
