    Hello Everyone,

I have been away from Morphos for quite some time and now I find myself looking to get back into it.

I just picked up a PowerMac G5 (Should have just kept my old one LOL).

The X800XT still the best video card? Or do we have a new king of the mountain?

    Kind regards,

    Matt

If it's a G5 with AGP-Slots the X800XT is still the king of the mountain.

...unless you have a X1950 AGP version at hand that outperforms it easily.
Mind you, there is no Apple Radeon X1950 BIOS for AGP version so if you decide to use one then you won't be able to display the Open Firmware and Apple Boot Menu (which makes installing MorphOS more tricky). Aaand you'll need to support the gfx card with some (usually two) Molex power connectors.

    Thanks for the feedback.

The Mac I bought is coming with a ATI 9650.

The Mac itself is a M9748LL/A Power Mac 7,3 A1047 early 2005 model so it looks like AGP will be my only option and the X800XT.

Does anyone have any idea where to pick one up?

Genuine Apple X800/X850XT? Good luck finding one.
But you can always try your luck reflashing a PC version (could work, could not. I had one card that worked after reflashing and one that refused to work - hopefuly I got it's original BIOS backuped).
PC version will not work with MorphOS without reflashing (X1950 will).

Watch out for 'fake' Apple cards, there used to be quite a lot reflashed X800's sold as genuine Apple ones. They would ofc work in MorphOS, but why should you overpay for a reflashed PC version? The genuine one is a blue one with a "monster head" sticker on the radiator, AGP PRO pinout with additional ADC power connector, no Molex power connectors, one DVI and one ADC port in the back.

No, X1xxx (R500) is still the max.

Thank you Andreas, I will begin looking for an X1xxx (R500) video card for the Mac.

If anyone knows of a good source let me know, ebay didn't have one listed...

As koszer explained, there are no such AGP cards for PPC Mac, but MorphOS does work with a PC one in a PPC Mac anyway.

Personally I used a SATA power connector to Molex connector adapter (from the second harddrive bay). I use only one HD in my PowerMac and the cable was easier to thread this way (but I needed to make it a bit longer).

Thanks to everyone for the help and patience! (The mind is the first thing to go they say. :)

I'm going to enjoy getting back into it again (for like the 4th time, lol).

I usually go Classic and I have been tweaking and maximizing them out and I ran into roadblocks, the email clients on classic system are really bad. Simplemail is decent, but easily trashes indexes and is slow with thousands of emails, YAM is buggy and not entirely reliable, Stargate is actually quite good on most of my systems, except my mediator based Amiga and is crashes with random (mostly fpu) errors and it won't keeps downloading the same emails. Crazy as it works perfectly on the other systems that are very similar... The other challenge is getting warp3d on the aa3000+ with the ragnarok is still not working and wasting to much time. MOS should just work out of the box like it always has...
