    I don't know if the Mac is special, but for my Peg this procedure worked well for several releases now:

    - copy ISO to work partition
    - mount kernel partition
    - mount the ISO, rename the old boot.img and copy the new boot.img to the kernel partition
    - reboot
    - check that the splash screen shows the new version
    - mount the ISO again and run the installer

    No need to enter open firmware.
