E-UAE: "Failed to initialize the GUI

    I've downloaded the MorphOS version of E-UAE from Richard Drummond's web site. I have created a uaerc with the following configuration:

    cpu_type=68020
    cpu_speed=real
    chipset=aga
    collision_level=full
    kickstart_rom_file=Mark:UAE/kick31.rom
    chipmem_size=4
    fastmem_size=8

    When I run "uae -f .uaerc", I get the following error: "Failed to initialize the GUI", right after the line "Rexx port 'UAE' installed".

    Any ideas?

    Try this one, it includes the native and sdl builds of the latest e-uae version.

    /edit

    I just tried e-uae-0.8.29-WIP3 but it runs a bit slow, back to e-uae-0.8.28-2 which runs a lot faster.

    If I understand correctly, the version I am using is the SDL version, and I don't have SDL installed, which is why it errors when running. Right? So if I use the non-SDL version, it should work?

    The E-UAE version on Richard Drummond's web site isn't SDL but PPC native, it needs MUIRexx 3.0 for the GUI.
    The non-SDL version from Fab should work but doens't have fullscreen support and Picasso96 emulation. If you want to use Workbench with RTG you should use the SDL version.

    Well I don't want a GUI, fullscreen or P96 :-) In fact, in Richard's version I couldn't turn off the GUI even though I set it to false in the uaerc. I'm guessing the reason it errored is because MUIRexx wasn't working.

    Sounds like the non-SDL version you linked to will work ok for me. I'm not at home at the moment but I'll give it a try and let you know.

    Thanks for your help!

    The non-SDL version *does* support fullscreen of course. The argument is the 'amiga' host in this case. Config examples are supplied in the archive for reference.

    Anyway :

    amiga.screen_type=custom -> meaning it will use a custom screen (there's "public" for window mode, and "ask" if you want a screenmode requester)

    amiga.use_overlay=yes -> if you want to enable overlay. This mode is faster than standard display, however you may not like overlay filtering.

    By the way, i haven't noticed 0.8.29 is slower than 0.8.28. Actually it's the same, even a bit faster in some places.

    Hi Fab,

    I didn't know the non-SDL version supported fullscreen. I will try 0.8.29 again later today. Maybe it's my uae config file but I had trouble with some demos and games playing very slow compared to 0.8.28 with the same uae config file.

    Btw on my laptop (Ubuntu Dapper) I also had problems with e-uae 0.8.29 wip 3, it was much slower than 0.8.28.

    @Fab,

    Ok, I tried 0.8.29 wip 3 again and the non-sdl version works fine, the sdl version was the only one I tried yesterday.
    But the sdl version slows down, it starts up ok but after a few seconds it slows down (not with all adf's). And if I switch fullscreen it slows down immidiately (all adf's). This didn't happen with 0.8.28. I'm using powersdl 11.8.

    Toto,

    I have to admit i almost don't test the sdl version, because my main interest is to run amiga games, and native version is better suited for that.

    Hi Fab,

    Now that I have the non-sdl version running fullscreen (I mainly use e-uae for demos and games) I'm happy ;-)

    Guys
    Are AGA demos at 030 speed? Also what about an App like VistaPro - how is the render speed?

    hi therem

    UAE on pegasos is, imo, able to execute applications at speed of 030... but... aga chipset is still way too difficult to emulate... with some aga games, i get constant cpu usage of 300-500 %... there are ofcourse some speed issues, like to degrade the resolution and disable the sound, etc, but... it's not that fun then... it's better to get an old a1200 and play games with her natively :-)

    bye, MarK.

    If you configure UAE to emulate AGA and play an ECS/OCS game, will it perform worse than if you play the same game with UAE set to emulate ECS/OCS? IOW, if you are going to play an ECS/OCS game, should you change UAE's configuration from AGA to ECS/OCS?
