    Is it possible to use a USB keyboard as your default choice within SmartFirmware console?

    If you have a Peg II, yes, but (at least in my case with a Cherry Keyboard) with some limitations (iirc F Keys, Console History and pressed key (meaning you have to press backspace for every character you want to delete) are not working yet).
    Otoh it is enough if you have installed a boot menu, or if you just want to type in some boot parameter from time to time.
