Miami and Cablemodem

    Hi folks,

I have a problem with my Pegasos and Miami. I am connected to a cable modem provider. I allready have three PCs connected to it with different operating systems, MacOS 9, Windows 98SE and Linux. All I had to do was to enable DHCP and the got an address from the ISP.

But with Miami and my Pegasos this doesn't work. I configured my Ethernet card and enabled DCHP, when I go online Miami tries to get an IP address and then gives up.

To be sure that it was not my Ethernet or my cable or the hub port connecting to the cable modem I tried it with static addresses (also enabling a static address on my Linux box).

This works fine, I can access the linux box from my Pegasos, browse the web server on it, no problems at all this way.

My cable modem ISP allows me to connect with 4 PCs, the Pegasos is number four.

I just don't know what the hell could be wrong, just enabling DHCP is not such a terrible task. Any ideas? By the way, my ISP is Cablecom from Switzerland.

If you are using 1.3 MOS be sure you use the via_rhinepci.device from 1.2. (I think there is even a 1.3 on the FTP ). And select for the connection in Maimi(DX) DHCP, I just can get internet to work when I have a IP (ex 192.168.0.5) All my other computers I have a IP selcted (XP Home laptop, iMac G4, XP prof and w98SE) Only MorphOS/Pegasos doesn't allow me to use a IP number only DHCP.
For other networking (ex I am using from the AmigaForever package the AmigaExplorer, to my windows computers) I can select a IP number.

    Hi Sven,

I'm not sure if I understand you right:
    >Only MorphOS/Pegasos doesn't allow me to use a IP >number only DHCP.
If I use DHCP it doesn't work, I don't get an address.
If I select the address myself (f.e. 192.168.7.2) it works. But that way I can't access the internet, because my ISP only allows dynamicly chosen addresses.

    >If you are using 1.3 MOS be sure you use the >via_rhinepci.device from 1.2.

I use 1.3 MOS, is there a problem with the 1.3 via_rhinepci.device? Could this explain my problem? Don't forget, with static addresses it works.

    Hi Spidey,
I seem to have a problem because my provider doesn't give static addresses, hmmm. For the 1.2 via....device, I could try it, but the chances for DHCP working are not so good as you state and I would first have to connect a modem to my Peg.

I think I will first try Genesis, I have it on my OS 3.9 CD, I just don't remember if by starting the OS 3.9 installer I can just chose to install Genesis (wouldn't be a bright idea to install the whole 3.9 on Morphos).

    Hi Yvan,

It's true you've got to have cooperation from your provider for having static IP-adresses. Fortunately I got that from mine provider.

Sorry, I didn't mean it was easily possible to get DHCP working on the Pegasos, instead I tried to say with me it wasn't possible to get it working :-)

You can install the whole of OS3.9 on a harddrive but don't expect to be able to run something from it rightaway. I installed a few times Genesis (you can select only to install this one from the OS3.9 cd :-)), but then you need Reaction-stuff running. I got the whole time error-messages with the resource.library.
But somebody got Genesis running (read it somewhere here in a thread)

    Good luck! :-)

    Wel some explanation.
I have ADSL (DSL) My (ADSL)modem is connectet to a router and in this router there is a static IP(for my ISP including password) btw this is a Draytek 2200E and does have a 4 way switch. And I use this router as gateway. All my computers, exclucing Pegasos and Amithlon, I can use a static IP and the gateway from the router. But with Miami(DX) I must use DHCP because it doesn't accept static IP and the gateway. This is for Pegasos and Amitlon., and also only for Internet. For connection to my other computers I use a static IP.

    Bye,

    HI Triumph,

So if I get it right you got to use DHCP with your Pegasos to connect it to your router?
This is really interesting, because the whole DHCP-part doesn't work
for me. Actually even with my A1200 it didn't work!
So I'm used now having static IP adresses with my home computers :-)

I remember having DHCP problems in the past with a classic Amiga and dial-in, the only thing I could do then was changing the provider for dial-in. This was easy for dial-in but it's another story if you have cablemodem access. Hmmm, looks like as if I will also having problems when installing Genesis, Morphos really needs an own working IP stack. If sommebody gots Genesis working, I will be grateful for any hint.

You may want to try "Miami Deluxe" if you can. I
connect via ADSL with DHCP and it works fine.
I did have to register the "MAC" address of the
built-in ethernet with my internet provider
though, so that they could identify the computer
connecting to their network. I was able to do
this online with my internet provider (telus).

MAC address can be found in Miami Deluxe under:
    "hardware->ETHER->SANA-IIparameters->HardwareAddress"

    Thanks Realstar,

but I use Miami Deluxe and I don't have to register my Mac Address with my ISP (already checked that).

Okay, problem solved. I get now an address with DHCP and my cablemodem ISP.

I think there were two problems, one was a problem of my ISP, I assume DHCP didn't work well for a few days. My other machines got the same IP address for days (which isn't normal with my ISP).

The other problem was, that the Miami config file I had (was burnt on CD), had a wrong MAC address in it.
I don't know which one, but not mine for sure. I changed it manually to my own MAC address and oups, it worked and I'm happy now and installing YAM.

But by the way, during troubleshooting I found some strange things:

I tried Genesis but when I started it I got the message:
genesis needs chooser gadget v44 installed is 41.110 (Morphos and my classic Amiga WB 3.9 both have 41.110 installed).

The installer is not able to create Directories. Okay I now know it's the default icon problem I will fix that later. :-)
