Today I decided to give Simplemail a try.

After some tweaking around I must say it is a real great piece of software. I didn't expect anything from the test and now I am going to throw YAM away.
    Did anyone do the same?
Why would you like to continue using YAM?

This is really a discussion that is not possible in other software-areas as we have no choice between 2 great packages on anything else than e-mailers. I would like to see something similar about Browsers in the near future too :-)

    I'm considering to ditch Yam,too because it's
dev-path is no more amigalike ... but SimpleMail is too
    much graphics for me ...
Some nights I've even considered to make my own
client with RxMUI ;-) Lazyness is what keeps me
    tied to Yam :-D

I did a serious test and moved all my thousands of mails to
Simplemail. I also think Simplemail is impressive, but it was not
ready for me when I did my test, and I don't think it is now.

My biggest gripe was that SM insisted on colouring text in my emails
and also when writing replies. Some of these colours could be changed,
but some of them were not possible to change either in SM or in MUI.
As some things were totally unreadable (something like yellow text on
gray background or such iirc) this made SM unusable so far (even
ignoring that I don't want emails to look like christmas trees even
if its technically possible to read them)..

Another problem was that it's very slow compared to YAM. When you have
thousands of mails in each folder this makes the decision easy.

I also like YAM better because I can have a textured background when
writing mails. I've gotten used to having a slightly textured "paper"
pattern and plain-coloured makes me feel uncomfortable now. ;-)

Anyway, YAM also has its flaws, most important for me is the way it
just hangs for a while when it doesn't manage to connect, and
meanwhileit will also not redraw its window due to lazy programming. I
guess that sooner or later SM will be the better program, but for now
    I'm staying with YAM.

I switched from YAM to SimpleMail last year and I am happy with it. No crashes, works how it should.

SimpleMail needs improvements but we had several updates already not so long ago so it should become better and better. Best email client for me on amiga/pegasos, i never really liked Yam. I do agree with the colours in emails issue, we should be able to disable it completely.

    sweet piece of software.

I prefer Yam because of the more advanced filter and search functionality.

But maybe I missed something in Simplemail

I must add, simplemail is unusable for me, because there is no
    multiuser support in simplemail :(

I think both programms are very good, and both run very well on my Amiga's and Pegasos. Until half a year ago I used Yam but nowaday's I prefer Simplemail because imho it's a tiny bit better.

    Hello,

There is also the problem of the attachment files in mails. When one has downloaded the attachment files one want to remove them from the mail. In Yam one can easily remove them if he considers that it is not necessary to conserve them. But in SimpleMail i did not find how to perform the same manipulation. I asked the question on amigaimpact irc channel and the answer was that it is not possible to perform this manipulation.

Recently switched to YAM after using Simplemail for many years.

YAM is a real nice client, seems faster.

Will report in after I get some more time with it...

I have tried Simple Mail a few times but always seem to switch back to Yam eventually. I like the feel and configuration of Yam more. Also I didn't see a way to disable the integrated read pane on the main interface of SimpleMail. I prefer to open a seperate window to read mails. Yam has an option under:

'Configuration->Look&Feel->Main Window->Show Embedded Read Pane in main window'

    that can be turned off.

    SimpleMail = IMAP-Support

    YAM = Only POP3-Support

I need IMAP and SimpleMail 0.40 for 68k works amazing on my Mac Mini with MorphOS 3.4.

I really like SimpleMail, because it supports IMAP and looks more modern.
THX for new MorphOS version which is much faster than the 68k one.

68k Version is very fast. The MOS Version doesnt work (GMail IMAP).

It's the same for me. I'm using YAM since 1999 or so, first on Amiga and since 2003 on MorphOS, and it's still my very favourite. Surely it lacks some standards like IMAP support or HTML rendering, and it's still using the ev1l NList classes. But IMHO it's still better than SimpleMail.

I'm going to go back to Simplemail. YAM has a few bugs I uncovered:
    1. The mail list doesn't work properly (it goes away as I type the email, weird.
    2. When new mail arrives I can't get it to go the first unread message...

So, are there any images availabe for Simplemail? One nice thing with YAM is the themes that are built in. Anyone build a new button set for Simplemail and have any recommendations on making the GUI look better?

SimpleMail 4.0 MorphOS version has a bug: when I use the horizontal moving slider of the mail list window everything inside disappears. Moving the vertical one or selecting a mail will make everything come back to normal state.
I tried SimpleMail 4.0 68k and this strange behaviour doesn't occour.

    A follow up review:

Simplemail is a better email client in the follow respects:
    1. The addressbook is more capable in SM, including handling multiple email addresses.
    2. Emailing a group works well in SM, in YAM there is a bug with it.
    3. Simplemail seems overall less buggy than YAM. I used both side by side for a few weeks and that is my observation.

I will say that SM is slow to load with a huge amount of email, YAM does not seem to have such an issue with it. with 7000 emails it take about 10 seconds to load on my PB 64 1.67 and an SSD.

I did download Simplemail for AROS and copied the images to give SM a fresh look (exactly like YAM:))...

A big thank you to Henes for porting it!

Switched back to YAM for MOS for the following reasons:
    1. Simplemail gave an xml error on boot up and I'm to lazy to fix it.
    2. YAM just had a recent update and seems to be more actively developed.
    3. Like the notifications in YAM concerning updates.

The only issues I have found with YAM:
    1. Sort of email and starting with new email seems to now work consistantly.
    2. YAM's email handling for groups isn't as nice and feature rich as Simplemail.
