I have downloaded and installed both apache and thttpd on Morphos 1.4
running Genesis 1.0.4 TCP stack.

I have had inconsistant success in serving basic HTML pages with
Apache (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't). So, I figured I'd
try thttpd. For some reason, both programs appear to do similar
things, they start, after a few seconds, they terminate. Watching
thttpd startup with snoopdos indicates that the paths are found, I
have left the default user as nobody (but I have also tried a www user
that I had setup for Apache). So far I haven't managed to serve a
page at all with thttpd.

Is there anything obvious that I must be forgetting to do for this
irratic behaviour?

Which apache version did you try ?
There are some online that are known to not
work correctly ... and it would help if
you could show your httpd.conf .

I never tried thttpd because apache runs
really great here ... I've even managed to compile
it with the help of tokai myself :)
