wish I had peg2 w/linux so we could tackle this one together, but somehow I believe dholm will be of more use.
Only thing that comes to mind for me is,
have ya tried manually entering the monitor sync/refresh rates and maybe in the device section for your video card you could try :

    Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"

(its definitely a shot in the dark)
some ppl also report they're getting two "device" sections for the video in the xfconfig file

more enlightening bits from another forum maybe

    Quote:

Looks to me like one thing you forgot to do was run fglrxconfig to configure the drivers. The radeon driver you're using (as listed in your config) is not the one installed by ati-drivers (that's fglrx, the ATI FireGL drivers, whereas radeon is the old kernel drivers that only work up to the 9200 or so). You'll probably have to save the resulting file to a custom location (since the defaults that fglrxconfig will give you are for XFree86, not Xorg), but that should not be too much of a problem.

You may also have forgotten to modprobe the fglrx driver, as it is probably not running.

Lastly, did you restart the X server at any point after all this? The settings won't be reread until you do, and of course you actually need to reboot to load the fglrx drivers (unless you modprobed them for the session).

    Hope this helps.

    Hi magnetic --

The bus id of your agp card will be different for 2.6 vs. 2.4 kernels.

Use lspci to see the busid of all installed cards.

    Hi, magnetic!
I had the same problem here!
    type "more /var/log/XFree86.0.log" or similar
(more /var/log/XF-TAB" is OK, too) and you can see where
there is the error! Here it was a not not found /dev/psmouse.
Make sure your usbhid module is activated, otherwise
    your usb-mouse won't be recognized....
With usbhid it works now here....
    Good luck!
    bye
