Since I bought my first Pegasos1 I have been using the demo version of
MiamiDx. It works fine, it's really easy to configure, and it has DHCP
support. But it has that annoying 30 minutes limitation.

Since it isn't possible to register Miami anymore to get a key file,
and since I didn't stumble across a "pirated" one (which I *would*
have used, since I consider Miami to be "abandonware" because of the
current "support" (or rather lack of) from the author), I simply
bought the AmigaOS3.9 CD to get my hands on the Genesis key file. I
then installed the MUI version from the Aminet and used the keyfile
library from the 3.9CD, and now my Pegasos has been online for a week,
    almost non-stop.

And what a difference it is! Previously I booted my PC to do even my
simplest websurfing needs, because I tend to be online for more than
only 30 minutes when I sit down in front of a computer, and the 30
minutes limitation simply made me use the PC instead. But since I
joined the RC5 effort my Pegasos II G4 has been running around the
clock and it has been online more than a week, almost non stop.

I have noticed a change in my behaviour thanks to this. Since my PC is
noisy, I only have that powered on when I actually need it. But the
Pegasos is always running. And it is alway online. I know that Voyager
and other Amiga browsers has major limitations, but they work just
fine on the sites I visit the most. So whenever I feel to, I just
simply sit down and surf. No waiting time for Windows to boot, no
noise, just plain enjoyment from the moment I sit down until the
moment I leave. I never turn my computer off.

This is how computing should be. 24/7 connection, complete silence,
and thus *always* within reach whenever I feel for it. No waiting
time, no hazzle. Just sit down!

(I am longing for MorphOS1.5 with native TCP/IP stack, it *will* make
    a difference!) :-)

My main PC died shortly after I got my Peg1. :) Luckily, I had Miami3 on my Amiga so I mearly moved it to my peg (I don't surf online with my Amiga anymore.)

I do have a Celeron 550 laptop that I use occasionally to:
    -to scan something.
-to burn something on CD (it's a SCSI cd rom burner, I'm waiting to pick up a DVD writer for my Peg, but first I'd like my Peg2 to be running).
-to install or transfer something to my PocketPC.
-to run VirtualDub (I use mencoder on my Peg to rip DVDs (that I own) with the goal of viewing them on my PocketPC during my commute. However, I still can't get it quite right and use VirtualDub to tweak it to work.)

Umm... ah... That's about it. :) I don't really miss my PC. Well, I used my main PC to do some video capture which I can't do at the moment. :(

    Hi takemehomegrandma,

I totally agree with you! :-D

So you only used the Genesis key-file together with the MUI demo-version of Genesis to get it to work?
That's a lot quicker than installing Genesis from the OS3.9CD and then installing the MUI demo-version on top of it as I did! :-)

I never used Genesis..is there any official site?
I use MiamiDX which is only the demo available and it is very irritating.
..there will be only one left.

    :-)

I experimented a little bit before I got it working, but in the end I didn't even run any install scripts. If I recall correctly I just downloaded the MUI demo version from aminet, extracted that to RAM:, entered the Genesis folder and copied the Genesis folder inside to the place I wanted it "installed". I then copied the key.library (I don't remember its exact name right now, was it keymaster.library or such?) from the OS3.9 CD to the libs folder inside the newly "installed" Genesis folder. From running snoopdos I figured out that I needed to copy two MUI mcc files from the extracted Genesis folder in RAM (I think there is a folder there like MUI/libs/MUI/libs/ or something like that), I copied the two missing files to my newly "installed" Genesis/MUI folder. And then it worked! (I didn't copy the modem related files, since I don't use modem)

Hmm, crystal clear, huh?! ;-) I am at work at the moment, and it's possible that I forgot something in the above. Perhaps I should write a step by step instruction guide for this?

Indeed it is - if it works... My connection currently works, as long as I press Disconnect - Connect every few seconds...

Yep, to me it is :-)
At least I understand why I had to use the install-button of OS3.9.
It copies that certain keyfile (I was searching for something with .key)

    Hi takemehomegrandma!
I installed Genesis a couple of days ago to try if it's really faster than Miami Deluxe. I still don't noticeing differences downloading with ADSL, I have to try Samba..
I noticed it is slower to start than Miami :-( I believed Genesis was lighter, instead it takes too many seconds to start and configure the connection.
    Now the questions:
1 - I added a run >nil: AmiTCP:Genesis in my user startup and i tell it to start iconified (or wih total no interface), but how to configure Genesis to go auto-online when loaded!? I can't figure it.
2 - It works and I can surf but in the lg window I get this message:"Could not obtain the hostname for this machine". What can I do to solve this? in the preferences -->Interface-->Resolve-->hostname I put my IP (Internet provider) DNS. What other to do?

I hope you or someone else can help me. Thanks a lot.

PegasosII "Elite" Machine --> PowerMac MDD "popular" Machine --> MacMini 1.5 "still more popular" Machine

    @ Miky060

To me, Genesis doesn't seem slower to start up. Both Miami and Genesis
are quite fast to start IMO. When it comes to network transfer speeds
one should keep in mind that both are 68k programs, and even if they
gets a lot faster thanks to the great JIT in MorphOS, they would
hardly beat a native PPC stack. But both works though, and the biggest
advantage with Genesis is IMHO that you can use the keyfile from OS3.9
(it is not possible to get ahold of a keyfile for MiamiDx any longer
in a "legal" way). The biggest strength of MiamiDx is the DHCP and
they easy to use set-up tool.

    Your questions:

1 - Try sending the interface name (or names, if you are
putting more than one interface online) as an argument, for instance:

run >nil: amitcp:genesis eth0 donotwait (if eth0 is the name of the interface).

You can see (and set) the interface name in Genesis prefs under the
"interface" tag. More info about options (like username and password)
can be found in the "amitcp:docs/interface.html" file, or by typing
    "genesis ?" in the shell.

2 - Try unchecking the "Query Hostname" checkbox, and enter
    "localhost" in the Hostname field.
