    Hello,

Being sick-bored with Windows, I was longing to the Amiga Workbench days, when I really had fun with my computer and I *REALLY* new what was going on.... In my quest for a fun OS, I tried Linux but I found it too alienating for the unitiated - I looked up www.amiga.com to see whats up on the Amiga front and found out that a new machine called 'Amiga One' is out, and Amiga OS4 should be available later this year (hopefully). Unfortunately, I was being put off by the really expensive price (around 900 Euros for just motherboard and the processor) when I bumped into the PEGASOS + Morph OS - a system which has intruiged me a lot - so I do have a few question before I splash out on this machine:

    1. I mainly use these programs on Windows: Photoshop, Nero Burning Rom, Frontpage, Word, Email, IRC, and Internet browsing. Will I find good substitutes for these applications on Morph OS?

    2. Is there a site with a list of commercial software available for Morph OS?

    3. Will Pegasos 2 run Amiga OS 4 once it is released?

I have more questions up my sleeves but I guess I should go slowly :D

Thanks a lot in advance for listening to my pleas!

    regards

    1.
    - Burining: yes there is already MakeCD and soon BurnIT v3
    - Photoshop: depends what you are doing there are some good Gfx software like: FxPaint (http://www.iospirit.de), ImageFX ...
    - Email: SimpleMail, Yam, MicroDot ...
    - IRC: the best IRC client in the world: AmIRC :-)
    - Internet browsing: IBrowse (not free of charge), AWeb, Voyager. I personnaly use AWeb, Voyager is very prommising but rather unstable, and IBrowse is nice but expensive.
    - Word like: There are "old" Amiga text processing software. A port of Papyrus (Office suite) is planed.
    - FrontPage: I had use MetalWeb a long time ago, I don't if it's better or not than FrontPage.

    2. If there is I don't know where

    3. Unlikely, anyway MorphOS is in my opinion far better than the OS4.

PS: There is also a "SuperBundle" available for MorphOS, for free if you download it and around 30/40 Euros for the CD version.

Don't hesitate to ask more questions.

    Bye

    Hi there,

    Thanks for your reply!

When you say "There are "old" Amiga text processing software" does it mean that Amiga software runs on Morph OS natively? (not by emulation)... Or I'm missing something?

Another question - there are two versions of the new Pegasos 2, the G3 and the G4 - which is the best bet, considering that the G4 costs nearly twice as much?

    Thanks again!

    Hi !

MorphOS has a built-in 68k emulator. It's integrated is a such way that you can run either MorphOS native or AmigaOS 68k software without even seeing it's a 68k software.

However, it's not possible to use AmigaOS 68k software which requiere the Amiga hardware (old gamesn old demos), for this job, there is a port of UAE.

Well, G4 is also twice faster :-)
It depends what you want to do, if you wish to edit huge picture, G4 would be better.

Anyway, I can tell that on a Peg I G3 MorphOS is very fast :-)

    Hi Everblue,

For "general" application useage (Browsing, IRC, paint,
MAME, etc) the G3 is surprisingly adequate...

I recently "fired up" a G3 Peg II, and was a little
apprehensive, thinking it may be slow, but not wanting
to spend too much on system I hadn't really played
on much...well...I am still totally shocked by the
speed of MOS, applications boot up instantly, even
little things like scrolling the browser window
around is faster and smoother than anything else
I've seen so far...I'm not disappointed one bit. Plus,
the G3 is fanless, so nice and quiet.

The G4 is cool, I'm going to try and get one soon
now that I know I dig the setup (the CPU card is a
drop-in replacement), but MOS feels fast regardless.

    Hi Latron,

Guess I`ll go for the G3 - the Euro is so strong at the moment that buying a G4 for me is so expensive!

Anyway I plan to use a Voodoo 3000 graphics card with it, hopefully its ok.

By the way, can someone suggest me a good online store where to buy from as pegasosppc.com charge a lot for shipping.

    THanks!

I was wondering, are there any IRC channels for Pegasos/Morph Users?

    Let me know, thanks!

    Everblue,

Well in all truth you can get a new or used mac G4 cheaper now. Rember choices of dual G4 are able also. Mac is using Dual G5 as is the classic Amiga.
Of which youcan go to ebay for both. Good luck in either case.
