It stands for the "Free Lossless Audio Codec". I think it's popular among audiophiles, and those who want to show off that their music is ripped legally (because they aren't traded much on P2P.) I'm the latter. ^__^

That's weird, because MPlayer supports FLAC on UNIX systems...
