That's a good point, for example I know there are some (the more expensive models IIRC) Minolta cameras that use a different colour space and thus need proprietary conversion software on the PC.
It would be a good idea to check reviews of any camera to make sure it doesn't require any special conversion software. That said AFAIK all the other major camera manufacturers use a standard JPEG format.
