    Hi,

I downloaded the 7 mb mame package. But I also remember there was a big (the file) GUI front end for it. Is this correct?

I guess you refer to Maguila. Anyway there is also a built-in MUI gui for mame, if you run it in workbench mode.

Yes, you will need to find the ROM files for the games you wish to play. Unfortunately, I don't think I can legally point you in the right direction beyond "Google for MAME ROM ZIP"

    :-(

    Hi,

When I run it from Ambient I get the error: Failed to create application. Any idea why?

I understand about the legal thing. Is there a way to make it legal? Like buying the games or so?

Sounds like a missing library.. I think you would be wise to give snoopdos a quick run, as I forgot what the dependancy was.

    Hi targhan,

I think it is popasl.mui that is missing. Really bad that in the docs there is no mentioning about this. Or I have missed it. I noticed it a lot with software, after running it always seems you need some libraries and there is not any readme that warns you about it. Should be, if you ask me.

Maybe there is someone who got a list of what libraries is needed?

Yeah, this has been a longstanding problem with shareware. I've even been hit by this kind of thing before--and, I've only developed user stuff from ARexx. Sometimes, it's just too easy to forget what all you're doing is depending on some library or function (when it's a shared lib that needs other libs).

I didn't include any documentation (shame on me), but there is a list of requirements on mame morphos homepage, which you should read.

No, shame on me. I was on your site before but I was to dumb to read all the text. That would have saved me some time. :-)

btw, if you don't have much memory (let's say <256MB, and that IS too little for some games, like Metal Slug 3) you might want to get neomame, mame, that only runs neogeo games, but executable is around 3MB as opposed to 25MB

Is there a MorphOS port of NeoMAME? If not, can someone port it?

My god, that's some memory you need to get that working. I will see for myself with some games what the speed will be.

I can make a more up to date version of neomame, if you want. However 256MB are more than enough to run MSlug3 when memory is not too fragmented.

Yep, but it's not possible with less (Which is usually 128MB)

    Hi,

When I load the GUI MAME I can set the roms path but when I set it on available I don't see anything. If I set it on all I see a lot of games and when I click on the game I have it set it cannot find it. Anyone know the right way?

Stupid question, have you also downloaded some game roms? They are normally files with .zip extension, and are located at /roms/

    Do NOT unarchive them!

(Well, they work unarchived aswell, but don't know, if they do when using GUI)

Another thing, you can try is:

Open Ambient Shell, and type "dir roms/#?.zip"
Then, chose one of them, and type "mame.elf <name without .zip>"

For example mame.elf mslug, if you
    1)Have that game and
2)Want to play it (You SHOULD, if you have it :-) )

    Hi Jupp3,

Well I did unpack them. But now being zipped (unchanged) the GUI tells me files are missing. Also from the prompt. Maybe the games don't work with this version? But I did see them in the list. Maybe wrong version of the game?

There are differences in rom file format between newer and very old MAME versions.

Are you sure, you have roms archived with exactly right name?

If you, say, had unarchived wow.zip and recompressed files as wizard.zip it likely would "guess" it is some other game...

When you write "mame.elf <romname>" It displays the name of rom, it tries to run.

    Hi Jupp3,

What would I do without you? :-)

I try to run phoenix.zip but then it says as name phoenixc, so a rename to phoenixc.zip should do it, right? I will see. Cannot wait to get a game running.

Is there not a list of games that work with this version or how the name should be?

So far no luck, renaming does not do the trick. Maybe non working games for that version of MAME. Maybe I get the new MAME version.

In rom archives, there's always(?) <name>.txt, that's the name .zip archive should have.

And about version compatibility, roms for version 0.3x might not be compatible with mame0.6x/7x... So that change in format has happened ages ago

Must be that. I did not see .txt files in the zipped files.

    Hi,

I tried a lot of games for Mame 0.69 but non of them are working. I know it's illegal to download roms but I have to see if it is working. And where else are you going to get them anyway? I salute to the ones that got working games. Guess I have to stay a bit more on Google then.
