OK, I've got a pair of developers that would like to work on a port of this package.
I'm sending out a Power mac and have $100 I can afford to start a bounty.

Any ideas how much this should be worth?

    Hi Jim,

Great work, hope the developers can stick with it. Thanks for your part in organisisng, motivating and providing machines for them. :-)

I'll happily contribute to a bounty for this, but not sure what the 'target' figure should be. Happily contibute £100 - a full office suite is easily worth that to me.

Given how OS4's Timberwolf project turned out it may be wise to be quite specific about the project goals.
Which parts are to be ported: the whole suite of apps, or just WP/Spreadheet/Database?
Printing support is a must - no point having an office suite which can't print!
What impact does the lack of Java have on functionality?
Native font handling would be nicce to have eventually, but not a high priority for first release(s).

Regular progress updates would be welcome: eg fortnightly, monthly, or at project milestones (I suspect this would also serve to keep interest in topping up the bounty).

In terms of ongoing development (after the initial port), it would be useful to either ensure all sources are open (not just stubs using private classes :-) ) and/or ensure that the devs are interested maintaining the port over the long term.

It may also be worth contacting Trevor Dickinson to see if any co-operation with the OS4 Libre-Office-porting team would be useful/possible/desirable. Yes, it's Thomas Frieden (and others..?) doing the port, but with his A-Eon (or freelance dev) hat on, not his Hyperion hat.

    Regards

    Rich

We are going to do an incremental approach. First WP, then Spreadhseet, then Presentation, etc..

We will get together and draft something formal and post it here as well as MOS-G5.org

If you need to set up bounty - morphos.pl can take care of it. Looking forward for that port - that will be something quite important for MorphOS users.

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for clarifying.
wrt the link Andreas_Wolf pointed towards, it looks like the Database is off the menu without a Java port. Shame, but that's OK for my personal needs.

Your roadmap sounds good to me: WP and Spreadsheet are the knife and fork of my office needs.

I look forward to the project, will probably be the end of May before I can add to the bounty, as finances are a little short this month.

    That would be very useful.
We could use a goal and and an organization to hold the funds.
You guys have the experience to handle this.

I'm sure that would be fine.
Its going to take me at least a week to get the Power mac to Steve and Eric (I purchased a drive with OSX on it and need to repartition it for dual booting - then obtain another OS key).

And the project will take some time to complete.
As to the bounty, I think it would be good to reward these guy's efforts.

Edit - @ Pampers - you are definitely to be commended on your excellent communication skills. I tried to use Chrome's translation function on morphos.pl's web pages only to find that Polish doesn't translate that well into English (not as bad as German, but no where near as good as French).
I've always admired the multilingual skills most Europeans seem to possess.

    Hey Pampers,
Is there anyway to expedite my user account on Morphos.pl?
I tried to register yesterday and today, but I am getting nowhere.

    Hi Jim

Your account was approved the same day you've registered. If you want to set up bounty we would need to make a proper bounty goals as this is not an easy job. Also we would need to set an amonut for each goal (or whole bounty), so people fell free to make your suggestions and we will work that out together.

That is kind of what I was thinking.
An initial bounty for the word processor and additional rewards for the other packages.
As to the total for the initial bounty, I'm completely up to suggestions.
I'll provide the initial $100 (or whatever that converts to in Euros).

What does everyone think about the value of this?

    What goal should we set?

Can morphos.pl leave it open to see what people are willing to contribute?

@Jim: I think that kind of info should come from interested developers - like detailed goals and money expectations. I think Krashan's bounty are great example of it - he always describe goals and expected amount for a signle part of work.

    OK that makes sense.
I can't ship the unit till Monday anyway, since my local UPS outlet has recently eliminated Saturday hours.
But the system is ready to go.

I have cash set aside to contribute to a bounty.

So now its up to Steve and Eric.
    Guys, this is your show.

What do you propose, what would you like to do, and what return would you like?

    Obviously, there is interest.

Is there a port of some software out there that comes with the source and is heavily commented?
I need to get an idea what has to be done to port open source to MOS.

I don't think that would really help you much.....

What do you want to port (apart from LibreOffice which faaaaaar to big for a beginner) ?

Some SDL/OpenGL game or something that is just command line ?
-> you gonna need to understand their makefiles and such to understand why ./configure fails at a certain point
Note: Some stuff (mostly libraries) can really be ported by ./configure + make without laying hands on a single file

Something with a GUI that is supposed to turn MUI in one way or another ?
-> learn MUI by coding some simple stuff with it

    As a personal note:

I had my go on porting OO.org 12 years ago, and what I've learned from that rather futile attempt is, that I will never try again :-o

Should be just a command line thing.
    will tap into networking.

    just one idea...

is it supposed to be tightly connected to MorphOS (like Ambient) or to be portable (like f.e. the Magellan-Project)? If it is supposed to be portable there might be interest to contribute money at least from AROS supporters (who have the same problem)

I've been out of the loop for about four days (feeling kinda under the weather).
Haven't shipped the Power mac yet.
I want to register it and buy a key (I have the needed $103 in my Paypal account).
Hope to ship by Friday, since UPS (in my area) is closed on Saturday)

Eric is in Canada until the 7th of May.
    Even you Europeans take vacations.

Probably for the better, since it still gives me something to play with.

And I have not run the regtool yet.

Although the money is in my Paypal account.

Remember, we still have Cinnamon Writer (a program successfully promoted by a hardware donation).
