Well, i had a working MOL setup,
but the Radeon 8500+ part interested
me, so i thought it couldn't hurt
to use your kernel and your MOL
    binary's.

Radeon chip still doesn't work, only
the FBDev, one little step further,
but MOL doesn't work anymore now,
    complaining about missing stuff in
    kernel modules. (mol.o)

    So now i have X-Window 640*480*8
radeon FBDev screen, with no MOL
    at all.

    Felix.

    hi felix,

"Well, i had a working MOL setup,
but the Radeon 8500+ part interested
me, so i thought it couldn't hurt
to use your kernel and your MOL
    binary's."

    OK

"Radeon chip still doesn't work, only
the FBDev, one little step further,"

The FBDev is just a framme buffer, not a driver for Xfree86.You need Xfree86 4.3 to use the Radeon 8500 + cards.

but MOL doesn't work anymore now,
    complaining about missing stuff in
    kernel modules. (mol.o)

My precompiled MOL kernel module includes the mol.o sheep.o. Install this by typing dpkg -i *.deb.This should place the modules in /lib/modules/2.4.18-rc4/misc.

    Download the mol-drivers*,mol_0.9.68* from http://people.debian.org/jensen/woody
NOT the mol-modules as this is the module i have made!.

    So now i have X-Window 640*480*8
radeon FBDev screen, with no MOL
    at all.

Install Xfree86 4.3, once installed use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, then select radeon, fill in the other details, then when you get to the question about "use framme buffer", say NO.This for some reason interfears with the xfree86 driver.you should then be able to use more than 8bit colours.

    hope this helps :-?

    Hi djbmister!
Are you preparing an installer also for Mandrake9.1PPC!!? It would be very nice, I know mandrake is maybe the best choice for linux newbee like me. Moreover I used it on pc for a bit and I liked it a lot!
What about the status of MOL boot disc project? ;-)
    Good work.

PegasosII "Elite" Machine --> PowerMac MDD "popular" Machine --> MacMini 1.5 "still more popular" Machine

    hi mikey,

"Are you preparing an installer also for Mandrake9.1PPC!!?"

Yes, in my free time but at the moment free time = 0

"What about the status of MOL boot disc project?"

Looking at the background of a Boot Disc on PPC.
Should be possible, but i need to research a bit more.
Pegasos is a different machine to a MAC plus legal issues.

But dont worry mikey, it will be something i will do, as it will be handy for me and other people. But i might have to make it a donation project via paypal. :-)

While trying to install debian, I run into the following error each
time: Everything goes well until the installer tries to unpack the
files selected in tasksel. After a while of working the system hangs.
There is no reason for it I can see since it crashes each time at
another file, so a damaged CD-ROM can't be the reason.

    I have a Peg-1 (April) with Radeon 9000 and 512MB reg.

    Exit
Debian is 'EXIT' for me. I am waiting till some mature distro will hit my desk. Even 'supermount' which is common stuff in all today's distro's is not implemented.
I could go on for a while, but I will not coz it's a sunny day:-)

    Hi!
I have my trouble with compiling XFree4.3, too!
    Already in make world...
At first I installed Debian3 r1, went into it,
    untared the pegasoslinux.bzp2 into /lib/modules
    and made config....
(I hope right up to now?)
    Then I untared the XFree-sources in /usr/src/
cd to xc and made it, too....
After compiling there are already some errors...
    Ignoring them I went into
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.
Fine so far, but is selecting PCI:1:0:0 right for
    Radeon9000?
    Please help!!!!
I was so prowd of having such a great computer,
    with MOS,Linux, MacOS....
Anyway thanks for the new kernel!!!!
Great work! Is it possible, that it doesn't support USB-mice?
    Bye

This is the very long way of installing Xfree4.3, unless you know how to compile and edit sources i dont recommend this way at all!.

IF you have a Fast internet connection then you are ok. I understand alot of you dont know how to use debian and make the most of it, but once you get use to it you will find its a very stable and efficient OS. heres an example of how i downloaded xfree86 4.3.

goto /etc/apt/ edit the sources.list, and change the words STABLE to UNSTABLE i.e

    deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org stable contrib non-us
    TO
    deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org unstable contrib non-us

Xfree4.3 is at a unstable state at the moment,so by editing the sources you are switching packages.

once you have done this, type apt-get update then JUST type apt-get install libc6, nothing else OK!!!

then re-edit sources.list again back to stable.
    type apt-get update
add this line to your sources.list

    deb http://www.penguinppc.org/~daniels/sid/
    $(ARCH) ./

    then type apt-get update

    then type apt-get install x-windows-system

it should install the xfree4.3 more efficiently.

all of this info is coming in my FAQ

"I was so prowd of having such a great computer,

Yes usb mices are supported, you need to recompile the kernel image source.

    Please help!
If a Debian comes with outdated software in its distro, it time to move to some other PPC distro.
The most problems are caused by the OUTDATED XFree86 4.1 software. Mandrake 9.1 has XFree86 4.30
version. I want to have a simple up to date distro that WORKS and NOT a distro that makes me work!

    Hi again, djbmister!

I just downloaded all revision4 files from your
    given http://www.penguinppc.org/~daniels/sid/
link, without developer or debug packages.
Is this and your guide enough to install
    XFree4.3???
Is it possible to just install every single .deb
package on its own and XFree4.3 anyway works then?
Or DO I have to adjust the apt-get source list?

Thank you very much once again!

"I just downloaded all revision4 files from your

Sorry i didnt explain myself, you dont physical download the files, by adding the http:// to the /etc/apt/sources.list, then typing apt-get update, it should add a record of files from that website, thus when using program apt-get install x-window-system should start downloading and installing the new Xfree4.3.

I've done it this way because it works out the easiast way and most effective. DONT install it mainly, it will make things worse. And another thing dont use dselect - does'nt work to well, just use it as package reference
(incase you dont know what a package name is called)

install aptitude (apt-get install aptitude).its more user friendly.

Thank you very much once again!

No problems, If you appriecate my work, please send me a donation (help section of my website).

my wife is getting annoyed with me,not spending enough time with her.
    :-?

I've had to disable the download section as it keeps cutting out my website.

    "Please help!

Getting close, mandrake 9.1 is a bit problamatic, but im having success with yellowdog 3.0. so be patiencent ;-)

In contrast to MorphOS, linux does seem like hard work, but dont forget, people like myself and other developers, contributers do this on our own free time, not payed, plus you are getting a free OS that you can contribute yourself and make better.

Its all a learning curve, and when i started, i was just as frustrated as you, but i gradely got to like linux and the freedom it brings in every way.So cheer up, it will get better :-)

If you are getting fed up, go to my getting started section, i have a paypal account, for a small fee i will send the full cds and up to date xfree 4.3 and kde 3.1.
