Is there any software that can set events /meetings like Outlook? Something that could run in the background and give reminders would be nice.

I use google calendar for that as I have gmail opened all the time when working on computer but I presume that's not what you are looking for.

Transpoclock has a reminder inside too but I guess you should give a try to PolyOrga wich is a complete organizer with calendar, diary, events, etc.
I found Daywatch on Aminet and though it's an old release (1997) it is a MUI demon really well done: a pure reminder that allows to add events end show message/execute action. Same as PolyOrga but without the other features.
