mencoder Problems

    Hello !
I tried mencoder/mengui to encode small .vob video files (thx-trailer) to mpeg4 (avi), but i am not happy with the results...

Problem No. 1: The quality is bad although i choosed the maximum bitrate (vbitrate). Seems different bitrate-setting has no effect on the result !?

Problem No. 2: IDE/DMA Bug ? Encoding stops sometimes and IDE-
LED is always on - nothing more happens... have to Reset !
    (Peg with April 2)

That 2 Probs make Mencoder useless on Pegasos for me...
Did somebody obtain other results ?

    ciao

    1) check you have no frameno.avi file remaining from previous
encoding and try again while setting all mpeg4 options to off except
    vqscale set to 4

    2) that's it

I just gave it a try and I haven't experienced
any lockups on encoding several files but the
quality isn't the best. I only tried via the
GUI which had all of the options ghosted out.
    Is this normal for now?

Thx for your answers and tips,i will give it a new try later this evening...

    @realstar
You can enable options by setting the checkmark on the left side for every line...

    Hi !

There is a "workaroud" for the IDE locks problem:

When you ar about to encode something launch UnitControl
(sys:Tools/UnitControl), and set all you CD/DVD Drive to "no
    removable"

It should avoid IDE locks but you can't change the disk properly.

    Hi!

You can specify the size of the encoded file with the

    -endpos <time/byte position> option.

Some examples out of the documentation:

    -endpos 56 = encode only 56 seconds
    -endpos 01:10:00 = encode 1 hour 10 mins
    -endpos 10b = encode only 100 MBytes

    Is there any other workarounds?

I mean, my Pegasos IDE ends up freezing EVERYTHING every now and then while I'm doing something such as :

    - copying a big file over my network to/from my pegasos
    - burning a CD with MakeCD
    - Sometimes when playing a DivX (quite rare tho)

I've been trying to pin-point every bit of what could be causing the problem and as my Pegasos never had the April fix, I'm wondering if this could be the only reason.

    .!.!.
    !.!.!

Oh, and BTW, I was going to make modifications to my resume with PageStream, but when I loaded it up, there was no display inside the document window ; no fonts, no images (Paths are all OK, fonts load in my font selector, etc). I loaded many documents (in case my resume was corrupted) but they all ended up showing nothing at all. Is this a known issue on MOS 1.4?

    Thanks,
    Fred

THX, but this is not what i exactly mean...

If i encode for i.e. a complete Movie from DVD, how
can i calculate the size of the result (divx) file ?
It is important if you want to burn it on CD..
I think the only way to "set" the size is by changing to
bitrate, but i can not get mencoder to work with this.

Has somebody here encoded a full DVD-Movie to DivX ?

    Regards

@the guy with red hair ;-)

    about "IDE workaround":

In the beta2-ML someone wrote that he solved the problem by setting
the buffer-size of partitions to 30.
I did'nt verified this until now, but it seems to work for him...
If you have problems burning iso-images (or files) from hardisk to cd
via MakeCD, try to set the Chunk-size to 256 !
In my case it helped very well :-)

I think the the IDE-Lookup mostly occours when transferring data
between primary and secondary IDE Port.
In worst cases you have to change your IDE-Configuration, for i.e.
set harddisk and cd-writer to the same IDE-Port.
