Potentially *very* important for video on the Net and a wide range
    of platforms.

In this move I see no advantage for us MorphOS users. OWB handles HTML5 + H.264 fine.
Good thing though will be more Firefox users switching from Flash to HTML5.

In my eyes, this is Google taking an initiative to build a common standard in the web based video area, which would benefit everyone.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

Seems OWB 1.7 already supports the new WebM format (VP8 + Vorbis, wrapped in Matroska). At least I can hear/see A/V when I go to Youtube, switch on HTML5 mode, append '&webm=1' to a video's URL and change to 720p resolution.

    Any confirmation? Fab?

    The anti-Flash sentiment is amusing.

I can almost understand Apples stance (since their older machines under OSX don't do A/V - even compressed A/V - that well), but its hardly fair to Adobe (please guys, don't take offense - its just an observation drawn for using Apple hardware).
I've used Adobe's products for years, and frankly I'm more impressed with their software engineers than I am with Apple's.

The shift to HTML5 is nice though since it looks like we're going to have an open standard rather than a proprietary product (which even if its free, means I have to rely on the good will of a specific company).

If what Andreas has posted is true, one of the final limitations of browsing under Amiga-like OS' is about to be eliminated.

    @Andreas

There's no official support for VP8 in ffmpeg yet (but patches for ffmpeg using libvpx are available on google site since yesterday).

So i guess youtube falls back to h264 if you add webm=1 (since i don't advertise this new VP8 codec).

Thanks for clarification. I had hoped that VP8 was already supported in OWB 1.7's FFmpeg by reverse engineering. Seems I was cheering too soon ;-)

Even if what I posted wasn't true (and in fact it isn't true, according to Fab's clarification) that final limitation you mention got eliminated in early March by the release of OWB 1.7, which added HTML5 support (including H.264 video, btw). And OWB's FFmpeg supporting the new WebM format (including VP8 video) is not a matter of "if" but only of "when".

IMHO Flash was horrible as it was damn slow, didn't use any acceleration until recently and was used to do something it was not good for (non standard web sites and user interfaces instead of just animations). It was a big mistake to use flash to show videos and it also was a big mistake to create webpages that relied solely on Flash. Moreover, it was a closed format. I wish Flash dissapeared from all websites.

Amazing: The "flash is evil" web site is still online, after ten years. And what it says is still valid for today! Remember, we're talking about computers, anything from ten years ago is useless Jurassic era... Wait, we are amigans (cough!).

I'd say that Flash is yet another example of badly used technology, not that bad in itself. But for web use? Crazy. Not to mention it almost never does anything really useful.

Where's the guy who, ten years ago, had the idea to make a plugin for a web browser? He's responsable for the Flash explosion. Or were we, consumers, actually accepting it? Were there so many unconscious computer users that long ago?

Hey Andreas make a plugin for Hollywood! Let's have our own stake at world domination. At least, Hollywood is already multiplatform.

"Another codec called H.264 has the support of Apple and Microsoft. Whilst it will be free for the next five years, it is encumbered by patents and its owners MPEG LA plan to charge for its use."

    Did you refer to this?
