Here is a link to the latest Blender port if anyone is interested. 3D modeling is not really my thing but maybe some Morphzoners can make use of this. Wikipedia says Blender is an open-source software program for modelling and rendering three-dimensional graphics and animations. Blender is available for several operating systems, including FreeBSD, IRIX, GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, SkyOS, and MorphOS.

    Hello.

I dig up this post to inform about the start of Blender 2.50 port on MorphOS. I've also started the port of Python 3.1.1 (3.x is mandatory for Blender now).

Just few WIP blender snapshots here:

    @ Yomgui

we are really very lucky that we have you :-) to port great and very much needed applications as IMHO we have a great OS but would need much more modern software for it, thinking of a DTP program like PageStream, or an equivalent of PhotoShop, or a professionnal sound editing program, or...

Thanks Yomgui for your excellent ports!!!!

It's "run" but not usable (got too many hits just by play a bit with some basic features, and there are too many memories corruptions also) for serious things.
Even the officials team don't recommend it : really for testing only.

    Exactly!
But isn?t there a version of Pagestream for MorphOS? Thought I read something some time ago.
Aladdin 4D is also still supported, but hardly known by those not steadily sniffin? around in the web.

In the past we had some real killer apps on the AMIGA which, with some brush up, would still be excellent today.
Imagine AdPro, DPaint, Imagine, Wildfire etc. ported an updated...
Maybe this would not be a dream...I could imagine, that a lot of this titles is abandonware today. So maybe it would be possible to acquire the sourcecodes for porting (we have some good porters here, see above :-)).
Maybe it is even possible to buy sourcecode using bounties...

Some corresponding news items from amiga-news.de:

    http://www.amiga-news.de/de/news/AN-2005-07-00142-DE.html (German)
    http://www.amiga-news.de/de/news/AN-2005-09-00138-DE.html (German)
    http://www.amiga-news.de/en/news/AN-2005-12-00013-EN.html

AFAIK the MorphOS native version is far from being usable.

PageStream 5 isn't usable for production at all for now :-( I and my collegs still use the v4 for production under MorphOS. It's good, stable and does a very professionnal job. PageStream's output can be image set without problems and we produce very high quality brochures with it BUT it's functions are completly outdated for todays standart in many many ways, so un updated version is becoming a must! I'm in contact with Deron Kazmeier and he promised a new native MorphOS version soon but no release date was given.

IMHO I think effort should be made in porting modern, high quality and professionnal software to MorphOS. I wouldn't put time in the portage of older software...

looks quite good. Looking forward to a new release. The last version I tried (dunno which version that was, quite while ago) was a bit crashy. Hopeully it will work out to edit a few vids that I will record next days. Looks cool anyway, big thumbs up!

What a pity that PS is not usable under MorphOS...I didn?t know that.

Basically I agree with putting effort in newer software. But the old titles are not totally outdated. Like e.g. Imagine or DPaint you already have a great level of productivity and features and in first place great concept (see intuativity). Or see AdPro with it?s timeless modular concept.
I think some old, or let?s say classic ;-), titles only need some brush-up on the GUI-side and some new up to date functionality and handling of newer file formats.
So if there is a solid base on which to build on, it could be worthwile investing some work instead of starting from scratch or porting an alien app with a different structure, philosophy, etc. Of course it has to be evaluated if doing a makeover of a classic title is more economic than programming/porting something new.

PageStream4 is usable. He means the latest 5.x version that is still far from usable, because it's just not finished.

    Yes, I understood that.
But he pointed out that in his opinion it would be better to pay attention to new software than to porting old.
My opinion on that is that there is potential in some of the classic titles so that workover and updating (if sources and licences are available) might be worthwile.

    @ Yomgui
Yes, AFAIR there was an attempt to port it to PPC some time ago by a new owner, but since then nothing more happened.
And that?s what I mean, Imagine was a very good piece of software and very nice to handle compared to other modelers and renderers (even Cinema 4D). So I think there is still much potential, if the soft is ported, brushed up (GUI) and actualized (some functions and filetypes e.g. mpeg).

Who knows, maybe sources of some classic titles are cheap or since abandoned free?

    Hello!

I remember you that a test version of Blender 2.50 alpha0 for MorphOS is available here:

    http://www.yomgui.fr/blender/blender-2.5alpha0-test-mos.lha

Don't hesitate to make some tests with it!
It's very important for all developpers to have feedbacks...

Another good thing: it's a standalone archive, no installation than uncompress the contents on you hard drive, is required.

    Notes:
    - I don't expect Blender run on Efika... if it does, be happy! :-D
    - blender runs by default in a full-screen Windowed mode, to change the size at startup, use option '-p' with 4 integers separated by spaces after: left-corner-pos top-corner-pos width height.
    - don't run blender from the archive, don't forget it's a virtual view in Ambient!
    - don't run also from RAM:, Python dynamic module loader doesn't support it.
    - known bugs are listed on the following page, don't email me twice ;-)
    - FFMPEG is enabled and working, but it's not Altivec-accelerated!
    - Browsing space with thumbnails enable works, thumb engine caches results in PROGDIR:.thumbnails/
    - My build (from official SVN r26240) doesn't suffer of the recent issue on the Windows version (crash at rendering), so use it, use it, use it! ;-)

    Thanks!

As I've said on AW: I'm trying some Altivec optimz.
Some code are already coded with SSE SIMD instructions: so I try to port them to Altivec.

    ... unsuccessfull yesterday :-D

But it's my first try with Altivec.

Contact Konstantinos Margaritis, a real AltiVec wiz. I think he still hangs around at "powerdeveloper.org". By the way, what a drop in user participation since they abandoned PowerPC for ARM...

Exact! I found performances are not so good, and computations can be really be optimized using SIMD code.

And it's an excellent excuse to learn Altivec (even it's a bit dead now...)
