before I search for pc solution, is there a program which converts avi to .asf video format on our system(s)? If not feel free to list the pc solutions.

Mencoder should be able to output asf.

thanks, as I feared the process would be command based, I found a gui on aminet, but saw no options for converting the file. I tried a readme , but didn't see one in gmplayer, which has mencoder . I'm afraid I need assistance with the commands

Well, the mencoder documentation is really quite exhaustive about all this.

Anyway,

mencoder yourfile -o output.asf -ovc lavc oac mp3lame -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4 -of lavf -lavfopts format=asf

You can also use vcodec=wmv2. You could select much more if wanted (video bitrate, audio bitrate, frequency, ....)
