I've been given a Cd with movie files on it. They are .avi, .mpeg and
    .asf.

I haven't been able to get any of them to run with AVId or Frogger and
I can't get mplayer to work at all.

In AVId I keep getting "Unsupporetd compression: AVI_DIV3!".

Can anyone reccommend a good movie player or tell me what I'm doing
    wrong?

    Cheers,
    Robert.

    @ Robert,

Talking about mplayer, which version do you use? The one from
    MorphZone download section?
If not (there is also another port floating around), I would
recommend, you give this one a try, as it is very stable and
    powerfull IMHO.
If yes, if would be helpfull if you can give some more information as
why mplayer doesn't work (do you get some error message or what).

If there is something mplayer can't play, I use FroggerNG here which
    is also very reliable.

AMP2 which I also try sometimes lacks some decoders, as it hasn't
been updated for a longer time.

    Hi Hak,

If I click the mplayer icon, it says "Loading mplayer" on the title
    bar, then nothing happens.
I also tried using the installer and get an error message, "Problem
    with source file/drawer "Readme.info" in line 58."
"Unable to locate file or drawer".

I tried Frogger - no joy there either.

    -EDIT-
Just discovered that SoftCinema will play the AVI's but the
registration site seems to have disappeared and it only plays for 30
    seconds.
    Bugger!

    @ Robert,

I took a look onto the install script of mplayer and in line 58 all it
does is to copy "Readme.info" to your destination directory.
Please check whether there is such a file in the installation
directory. If not, chances are high that something went wrong during
    downloading/unpacking of the lha file.

    Just for clarification:
I'm using the mplayer you can find in the download section of
    MorphZone.
    Name: MPlayer_0.90_MorphOS.lha
    Size: 1594212 bytes
    MD5Sum: c0d545e3ecd39cad8c5cc2310ef281e7

Try starting it from shell. What is the output there?

    @Robert:

    1. download mplayer archive from morph.zone

    2. extract the archive

    3. Don't use the installer, just copy the mplayer stuff from the hidden installdata drawer to the destination of your HD.

    4. start mplayer

I'm sure, because the mplayer installscript fails for you (you probably installed a wrong installer?) it had not copied the mplayer executable. :-)

Ever considered contacting the author, to report a bug or at least obtain some help to get things working?

    softcinema is dead.

Well, I wasn't sure if it was a bug.
Since other peg users seemed to have it working ok, I thought here would be the best first stop.

Bugger. That's a shame, as it's the only one that worked straight off.
I downloaded it, unpacked it and bingo, click the icon and you're away. Why can't all software be like that? (Rhetorical)
    Isn't that just frikkin' typical?

    @robert:

if u install froggerng like explained in the manual it works very well too (it also includes most of the softcinema functionality, AFAIK)

    - download froggerng 2.07 MOS
    - download plugins 2.07 MOS

    - extract both archives
    - copy the plugins to the frogger/plugin drawer

    - start frogger.mos from a shell with high stack, e.g.:

    > stack 1000000
    > froggerng.mos

    - if u start it from ambient, then don't forget to copy an icon and set high stack in the icon information, else it can easily crash

    regards,

    @tokai:

Cheers for the advice re. frogger. (I would have quoted your text but
alas voyager has no copy and paste facility - a tad poor, eh?)

I haven't actually tried it yet. To be honest, having to start it from
shell and set a stack size is hardly user friendly in my opinion. As I
said with softcinema, I feel that functionality of a programme is all
well and good but if i can't just click it to make it work, i rapidly
lose interest, as I'm sure countless others would. Softcinema had that
    "click and go" functionality. Frogger?

Then again, I'm just a user.....

But thanks anyway, I appreciate your help.

Frogger does not require setting bigger stack, its set to big enough within the program, using libnix feature. Same was in softcinema IIRC, but I am too lazy to check the sources right now...
